Asterix Reading Order!

February 26, 2021 by Charlotte Fierro Leave a Comment

Every French person has heard these words at least once: “The year is 50 BC. Gaul is entirely occupied by the Romans. Well, not entirely… One small village of indomitable Gauls still holds out against the invaders.”

Written at the beginning of every volume of the adventures of Asterix, these are some of the most well-known words in French comics — and French pop culture in general. They sum up an idea at the core of Asterix: the irrepressible resistance against oppression, something fundamental to a series that started publication barely 15 years after the end of World War II.

First published in 1959 in the French comics magazine, Pilote #1 , Asterix was created by writer René Goscinny and artist Albert Uderzo. Highly reliant on humor and wordplay, Asterix also lives and dies by Uderzo’s art style, which pushes the medium forward with its dynamism and expressiveness, taking the “big nose” style of the Marcinelle School and expanding upon it, strongly influencing the next generations of French and Belgian comic book artists.

So if you want to know more about the adventures of Asterix and Obelix, let’s talk about some Gaulish comics! [Read more…] about Asterix Reading Order!

Quicksilver Reading Order!

February 18, 2021 by AC Elliott Leave a Comment

Let’s get this out of the way. If the Marvel Universe put together a tournament to crown the most unlikeable character, our friend Quicksilver would be the #1 seed. Pietro Maximoff — along with his sister, Wanda, the Scarlet Witch — graced us with their presence way back in the original Lee/Kirby X-Men. Pietro has remained brash, impatient, and generally the worst throughout his comic history. He also happens to be a world-class speedster who has spent significant time with the Avengers, the Inhumans, the Fantastic Four, and across various X-Books. Let’s get up to speed. High Evolutionary Reading Order!

February 14, 2021 by AC Elliott Leave a Comment

Brilliant with a touch of madness, the High Evolutionary has a unique history even by Marvel standards. The High Evolutionary is obsessed with using genetic manipulation to advance the human race, a fixation that has taken him from early human to a being capable of going toe to toe with Galactus. He stands apart from your typical mad scientist in that his actions, while beyond extreme, are genuinely for the betterment of humanity and supported by sound science. They say to make an omelet, you have to don a metal battle suit, violate some ethical standards, and re-engineer a lot of eggs. [Read more…] about High Evolutionary Reading Order!

Avatar: The Last Airbender & The Legend of Korra Reading Order!

January 30, 2021 by Charlotte Fierro Leave a Comment

Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the adventures of Avatars Aang and Korra were told in two amazing animated shows. And in 2020, when the world needed them most, they arrived on Netflix and became more popular than ever.

However, rare is the fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra who has followed the story’s official continuation at Dark Horse. And who could blame them? Both television series have clear, satisfying endings that don’t demand being revisited in a new, different form (looking at you, live-action remake). So what could comic books possibly have to add that the two shows didn’t already do during their run on television? [Read more…] about Avatar: The Last Airbender & The Legend of Korra Reading Order!
