Batman

Cassandra Cain Reading Order!

July 6, 2022 by Gabriel Rodrigues 1 Comment

Created by Kelley Pucket and Damion Scott, Cassandra Cain, one of the Batgirls, has been through a lot in the DC Universe, she even disappeared for a while after the “New 52,” but the recent years have been fantastic for her.

Introduced in the “Mark of Cain” story-line, Cassandra suffered years of abuse and was never taught how to speak or write, all so she would accurately interpret and read body language to the level she would even be able to predict it. Cassandra was trained to be a killer, but she escaped that life and, nowadays, does her best to save people and dedicate herself to justice and heroism. With an obsession that surpasses and even scares some of her friends, like Tim Drake and Stephanie Brown, Cassandra wants to be Batman; she wants to grow and be the same symbol that said she could change and be better.

As I said, Cassandra went through a lot, even lapses into villainy and weird mind control. Those things are never good. But they only represent a tiny fraction of her story, and I’m sure you won’t want to miss the rest of it. She’s not just the best Batgirl, she’s one of the best characters from DC Comics. The perfect unit of Batman in BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES

This year marked the 30th anniversary of Batman: The Animated Series. It is, undoubtedly, the best adaptation of Batman in any media outside of comics. Its influence over the legacy of Batman, and the superhero genre in general, is undeniable.

The art deco style that Gotham City is rendered in not only gives the show this pulp quality that ties it perfectly with Batman’s influences, it has become synonymous with how Batman fans perceive Gotham City. Alan Burnett, one of the producers on the show, described the show’s look as “dark deco.” Paul Dini, who not only served as the story editor on the show but also wrote some of its best episodes, described it as “what if the 1939 World’s Fair had gone on another sixty years or so” and it really does feel that way. The world of Batman: The Animated Series is a world where supercomputers and rocket cars can co-exist with black-and-white TV screens and rotary dial telephones.

Batman vs Predator: Humanity’s Greatest Creation (Or At Least The Best Crossover Ever)

June 15, 2022 by Matt Draper Leave a Comment

It’s a hot night in Gotham City. The kind of night that brings out the darker side in a dark city. But there’s something out there that puts even the most dangerous Gotham citizens to shame.

It’s not Batman. It’s something much worse.

Published from 1991 through 1992 in 3 issues, Batman vs Predator saw Dark Horse and DC Comics come together for the first time for a story that sees Fox Studios’ alien hunter arrive in Gotham, pursuing dangerous game throughout the city until it encounters the most dangerous prize – The Dark Knight. With Batman trying to solve who is behind a string of grisly murders in his city, his search leads him directly to the Predator, only to be badly beaten and nearly killed in his first encounter. Now with Bruce Wayne physically broken and the Predator tearing through Gotham, Batman will have to find a way to beat an enemy unlike any he’s faced before for the sake of his city.

On the surface, a comic centered on slamming together two popular but dissimilar characters seems like a quick cash grab, and while Batman vs Predator is very much a blockbuster comic, it’s a crossover blockbuster comic done right. One that shows the potential of the high concept. It’s a silly idea. A fanboy dream match played to its full extent and given a dramatic heft that makes you buy into its conflict.

And what’s great about Batman vs Predator is that Batman fights the Predator in it. This is a scientific advantage over almost all other comic books.

From the stop and start history of inter-company crossovers to the thrills of a story created by Dave Gibbons, Andy Kubert, Adam Kubert, and Sherilyn Van Valkenburgh that weaponizes the concept of “Batman with prep time,” to its contribution to the crossover boom that followed, I simply have no other option than to declare Batman vs Predator as humanity’s greatest creation. Or at least the greatest comic book crossover ever.

CBH Birthday Challenge: Batman #34

April 17, 2022 by Dave Leave a Comment

A couple years ago, I decided to spend a birthday reading and writing about comics that shared an issue number with my new age. Some people like to celebrate with “cake” and “parties” with “friends,” but obviously I choose comics. So, for Big Daddy Dave’s birthday 34, I’m picking another issue #34, surprisingly off the beaten path, picked because I’ll soon be watching The Batman on HBO Max and I’m in the mood for Dark Knights.

Understanding The Dark Knight Strikes Again: Frank Miller’s Self-Destructive Magnum Opus

March 9, 2022 by Matt Draper Leave a Comment

Gotham is saved, the future finds hope, and the Dark Knight has returned. But when the world is at its worst, it’s time for the Dark Knight to strike again.

In 2001, Frank Miller returned to DC Comics for a belated sequel to his highly influential Batman dystopia Dark Knight Returns. The result was the three-issue The Dark Knight Strikes Again, a story that sees the aged Bruce Wayne continue his underground fight against corruption in a future world gone increasingly insane. But this time, Batman isn’t alone. He’s joined by the returning Carrie Kelley, now Catgirl instead of Robin, and a growing band of old Justice Leaguers, escaping imprisonment and retirement to fight back against the forces of Lex Luthor. And there’s also a new shapeshifting Joker, a terrorist Brainiac, and a media gone insane, but we’ll get to that later.
