Deadman Omnibus Review!

December 8, 2020 by Sara Century 2 Comments

For modern fans of Deadman, the character will likely be best known as a melancholy spirit with a penchant for teaming up with Batman to assist in solving mysteries that the Dark Knight can’t handle alone. The Deadman Omnibus collects many of his early appearances, including his debut in Strange Adventures, and various team-ups with characters like Aquaman, the Challengers of the Unknown, Swamp Thing, and the Phantom Stranger. A surprisingly ubiquitous character throughout much of the late Silver age running into the Bronze age of comics, these early adventures give us a slightly different character than the handful of guest appearances he’s had in the modern age would imply.

Many of the greatest creators of the time worked on these Deadman stories, including Len Wein, Neal Adams, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, Keith Giffen, and many more, via this somewhat scattered handful of appearances. Deadman’s popularity for the time is unquestionable considering how often he showed up, but it still took all the way until the mid-eighties for him to land his own mini-series, and his appearances have become increasingly sparse over time. This omnibus will be good for fans of the character, but it will also collect a smattering of tales that otherwise could easily fall under the radar even for longtime comic readers. Wonder Woman: Dead Earth Review!

December 5, 2020 by Kenneth Laster Leave a Comment

Wonder Woman: Dead Earth is a DC Black Label book by writer/artist Daniel Warren Johnson, Mike Spicer, and Rus Wooton, and it’s a weird comic book. The premise is very straight forward: Princess Diana of Themyscira wakes up in a post-apocalyptic wasteland and has to uncover the mystery of what went wrong and protect the remains of humanity. On the surface, the hook isn’t really all that different from Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Last Knight on Earth, but what really set it apart was Daniel Warren Johnson spearheading this book.

Johnson’s Shonen influence and work on Murder Falcon and Extremity really make him an exciting artist; his work conveys an over the top momentum and action that is a really fresh presence on a big two book. And objectively, Wonder Woman: Dead Earth is a visually stunning book and plays so perfectly into Johnson’s strengths as an artist. The story and plot are where it gets a bit dicier. At its core Wonder Woman: Dead Earth, is a story around the notion of second chances told really effectively, but its problems come when the story is put within the context of DC Comics’ fascination with overly grim settings, and the broader mythology of Wonder Woman & her meta-textual themes and context in the real world. SUPERMAN (1978) – Finding The Hero Inside Us

November 11, 2020 by Matt Draper Leave a Comment

Doomed planet. Desperate scientists. Last hope. Kindly couple. And a legend that has inspired generations.

Richard Donner’s Superman is the defining superhero film, sparking the mainstream big budget era of comic book films that would eventually be shepherded into continual success by the likes of Tim Burton’s Batman and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. But Donner’s film is more than just a pillar of a subgenre, it’s a masterpiece in its own right, interlinking the romantic charm of bygone Hollywood with the modern era of blockbuster spectacle. Promising to make its audiences believe that a man can fly but giving them a story that’s more layered, charming, and human than what its central concept would have you believe.

The story is simple yet iconic, reiterating the classic tale of Clark Kent’s rise to heroism and itself being reiterated upon by dozens of films since. [Read more…] about SUPERMAN (1978) – Finding The Hero Inside Us

Theses on Three Jokers by Geoff Johns & Jason Fabok

November 3, 2020 by Sean Dillon 3 Comments

Ed. Note: Spoilers for Three Jokers (and more or less the oeuvre of Geoff Johns) follow!

0. Let’s just get this out of the way: The Killing Joke is not that good of a comic. Even by the standards of bad Alan Moore comics, this sticks out in terms of its quality. Where most other trademark bad Alan Moore comics are bad for more interesting reasons (Neonomicon and later volumes of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen are bad for interesting yet horrifying reasons), The Killing Joke is perhaps Moore’s only major work that’s bad for the boring reasons most other comics are. It’s bad because it lacks ambition to be anything other than a story about Batman and the Joker. It’s bad because it treats Barbara Gordon more like a prop than a character. It’s bad because the environment it came out of was toxic to the point where Alan was explicitly told to “Cripple the b*#ch.”

In short, it’s bad in the same way comics like the Vigilante arc “Father’s Day,” the Violator miniseries, and Three Jokers are bad. [Read more…] about Theses on Three Jokers by Geoff Johns & Jason Fabok

Batgirl (Rebirth) Review! | What the Future Holds

Vol 3: Summer of Lies
Vol 4: Strange Loop

Vol 5: Art of the Crime
Vol 6: Old Enemies

Series Writer: Cecil Castellucci

Vol 7: Oracle Rising

Overview | “Rebirth, Batgirl, and Genre Books”

Batgirl Rebirth picks up from Gail Simone’s character-defining run and Batgirl of Burnside during DC’s New 52. Barbara is again in her early 20s, her previous continuity retconned so that she survived the events of the Killing Joke without permanent effect. More importantly, without the full trauma of the event. Pair that with Simone’s empowering story of recovery and an aversion to complicated continuity, and Babs is once again the joyful, rebellious cop’s daughter. Pleasantly, she also maintains a lot of the “teenage girl detective” archetype that initially made her popular, despite Rebirth depicting her as a grad student in her 20s.
