Best of 2021 – Nubia and the Amazons

January 6, 2022 by Monika Estrella Negra Leave a Comment

Written by Vita Ayala and Stephanie Williams, Art by Alitha Martinez, Mark Morales, and Emilio Lopez, Lettering by Becca Carey

In the Prelude to Trial of the Amazons, Stephanie Williams and Vita Ayala create a new chapter for Nubia that expands her canonical story even further. Gone are the days when she was only considered to be the “Black Wonder Woman” – Nubia now has the chance to stand in her own glory and story. The series has a stacked and diverse crew behind it – all are Black and/or Latinx, a standard that is still relatively new in the comics world. To ensure that this story is crafted by the people with lived experiences and identities that mirror the character, Nubia is given the chance at an authentic perspective in her world. Because let’s face it – even Themyscira has its sociological issues. [Read more…] about Best of 2021 – Nubia and the Amazons

The Old 52: Playing God in Wonder Woman

April 6, 2021 by Dan Yell Leave a Comment

He didn’t even want the book, but to hear him tell it, Brian Azzarello saved the Wonder Woman New 52 series. In an interview with Boom Studios CEO, Ross Richie, Azzarello explained that he only took the Wonder Woman title because he was “appalled” at what DC was going to do with the character for the reboot. Azzarello recalls being at a dinner with DC publisher Dan Didio, where they discussed his plans for a different New 52 series. When Didio told Azzarello DC’s plans for Wonder Woman, which Azzarello thought would have “fundamentally hurt that character,” Azzarello spent the rest of that dinner coming up with a brand new pitch for the series that eventually became the Wonder Woman we got ten years ago.

At its core, this Wonder Woman series was a family drama. It worked because the creative team made the family a central part of the story. In fact, Wonder Woman doesn’t even show up until ten pages into the first issue because Azzarello and artist Cliff Chiang devoted that space to the conflict surrounding a few important family members: Zola, a mortal impregnated by Zeus, and Sun, a god whose powers include clairvoyance. Aside from Orion, there weren’t any major characters in the series’ first 24 issues that weren’t part of the family. [Read more…] about The Old 52: Playing God in Wonder Woman

The Compassionate Brutality of “Wonder Woman: Dead Earth”

February 10, 2021 by Matt Draper Leave a Comment

In the aftermath of a fiery apocalypse, humanity clings to life with little hope of a future. And into this world awakens Diana of Themyscira. But what can Diana save when so little of the world she loves remains? And what will become of Wonder Woman when she learns the truth of what happened centuries ago?

Daniel Warren Johnson’s 4-issue miniseries “Wonder Woman: Dead Earth” was published in 2020 under DC Comics’ Black Label imprint and follows Princess Diana, who has suddenly woken up in a post-apocalyptic earth. The causes of Earth’s destruction are vague, but centuries earlier the planet was scorched and now a small band of survivors fights to stay alive in a barren wasteland overrun by grotesque monsters known as the haedra. The fight to save what’s left of humankind will reveal what caused this apocalypse and challenge Wonder Woman’s values of love and compassion in a brutal, hopeless world.
