Who Watched the Watchmen? DC Universe Rebirth

October 27, 2022 by Ritesh Babu 2 Comments

DC Rebirth era of comic books

It is often said that Watchmen is the most influential comic ever to be released. That comics wouldn’t be where they are without it, for good and for ill. But how did we get here, exactly? More to the point, just what influence did Watchmen provide to the larger world of comics? What, ultimately, is the legacy of Watchmen? Who watched the Watchmen?

Before Watchmen failed. It had proved to be a disaster that nobody seemed to really want more of. DC’s hopes and dreams of winning hearts and minds whilst exploiting the Watchmen IP had come crashing down. Nobody, it seemed, cared about what came ‘before’ Watchmen, much like they weren’t dying for a sequel about what happened ‘after it’. It turned out they just liked Watchmen, on its own.

And so the enterprise of Watchmen exploitation had to be rested…for a while at least.

October 25, 2022 by Comic Book Herald Staff Leave a Comment

This week on Creannotators, I interview comic artist and writer Blue Delliquanti about their hit webcomic O Human Star! We discuss the state of webcomics, queer graphic novels, and their new YA graphic novel, Across a Field of Starlight.

On Comic Book Herald’s ‘Creannotators’ I’ll be interviewing some of my favorite creators in comics about specific runs, graphic novels or series, looking for their insights on the inspirations behind the work and ideas or hidden material readers may have missed. Creannotators is an audio annotative guide to enjoying the intricacies and thinking in the art. Thanks for listening, and enjoy the comics!

Gotham City is Hell: Why We Deserve Batman

October 22, 2022 by Steve Baxi Leave a Comment

In Gothic: A Romance, a 1990 Batman story from the pages of Legends of the Dark Knight, Batman finds himself battling a satanic monk who attempts to kill everyone in Gotham City, and offer their souls to the devil in exchange for immortality. His plan rests on Gotham’s specific architecture, utilizing a series of cathedrals designed to place the stress of their weight up towards heaven. Batman eventually stops him, but this poses an interesting question: If the cathedrals of the city point up to heaven, then where is Gotham? The answer of course, is hell.

Gotham City is Hell.

Gene Ha Interview! “Wonder Woman: Historia”

October 21, 2022 by Comic Book Herald Staff Leave a Comment

This week, I am honored to be interviewing Gene Ha, an artist on volume two of DC’s Black Label Wonder Woman: Historia. Ha is also the writer and artist behind the comic “Mae” and was one of the chief artists involved in his comic “Top 10.”

You can hear our full conversation on Comic Book Herald’s “Creannotators,” on the podcast.

But since some people prefer the ancient art of “reading,” we’ve also transcribed the interview below, talking with James about making the graphic novel. The transcription has been slightly edited for clarity. Read and enjoy!
