There’s a prevailing theme in comics coverage this year that Marvel Comics are in a state of unrelenting disaster. Marvel has done little to assuage these fears, with PR disaster after PR disaster, and an uncanny mutant ability to stick a foot directly in a mouth.

In truth, it’s been a startling fall from grace for Marvel since the conclusion of 2015’s Secret Wars – actually since October 2016, when Marvel bewilderingly decided to release the start of All-New All-Different Marvel 3 MONTHS before Secret War had even ended. After spending the vast majority of the 2010’s in control of the Big 2 power rankings, and watching DC Comics bumble through (an increasingly underrated) New 52, Marvel found themselves directionless and without a map in 2016. I still remember in college when a buddy told me he had a USB stick with the complete X-Men Animated series. I swear he could have told me he had cut shots of Smirnoff vodka with the actual fountain of youth and I’d have been less excited.

Animated comic book shows got me into superheroes, and after years watching the same episodes on repeat, or only finding the first 3 parts of a 4 part story, suddenly there it was at my fingertips. I mean technically I’d consider my wedding or the birth of my son as the best days of my life… but it’s close. Real close. Some might say too close.

Of course, within a year my elated analogy would be completely antiquated.
