Marvel Fresh Start is the 2018 summer rebranding of the Marvel Comics publishing line, following hot on the barely-walking-yet heels of late 2017’s Marvel Legacy.
As the name suggests, Marvel is desperately positioning this rebrand as a great time to jump onboard with any number of comics getting (yet another) number one issue.
Fortunately, the announced creative teams leave plenty of reason for optimism. Below you’ll find a list of Marvel Fresh Start comic book series, and the order in which you should read them.

Damon Boser says
When should I start reading Hunt for wolverine? It’s missing from this reading order. Also missing his death of Doctor Strange.
Damon says
Love that this part of the guide is finally being updated! Hopefully more updates come soon before you switch your focus to continuing to work on part two of the fresh start guide!
Anton says
Absolutely love the lists, been following it for years now! But After we hit empyre there is no chronological order for any of the comics anymore other than the big events. I was wondering if it’s going to be updated or if you are just going to be doing the events from now on?
Antonio says
Absolutely love the lists, been following it for years now! But After we hit empyre there is no chronological order for any of the comics anymore other than the big events. I was wondering if it’s going to be updated or if you are just going to be doing the events from now on?
Liam Gameboy says
Yo Dave could you please update this list with the new marvel events like king in black
Paul says
This! And the fast track guide as well.
Liam Gameboy says
I’m also south African but I’m from Johannesburg
Siladitya Dash says
Hey Dave! It would be really helpful if you could add the non X-Men issues like Gwenpool #5, etc to the Dawn of X hardcover reading order and TPB reading order as well. It would be helpful for those who are not reading issue-wise. Thank you!
Cam Moore says
they are in the main DoX reading order
Maciej says
Hey,
Im kinda confused how I should go about and start following this list. Is it the reading order you have to read to understand everything or if I don’t want to for example read for example so many x-men or street defender comics, would it be okay to skip it? I am asking because I don’t know if these are the absolutely necessary comics to get to speed with current marvel or not. Thank you in advance and thank you for the list :))
Zak says
Keep updating this Marvel comics chronological order and keep it in this format please. This is super helpful for a lot of us!
Patrick says
Hey, Just wondering will this list ever be updated or is there another list that starts after this one
LuanK says
First of all, thank you so much for this. You’ve made it super easy and convenient to get back into Marvel comics. With the help of your guides I’ve gone from Marvel NOW all the way up to Fresh Start (Just recently finished Absolute Carnage).
But looking at the list and planning ahead, I noticed this list stops at Empyre and also seems to be missing some limited series like MEET THE SKRULLS, MAESTRO, GHOST RIDER, DOCTOR DOOM, REVENGE OF THE COSMIC GHOST RIDER etc.
While I do see you cover the major events, it’s nice to know which order to read the ongoing and limited series’ too.
Any Chance you’d be able to update the list up to the current KING IN BLACK, when you have a chance.
Thank you in advance.
LuanK says
By the way, I’m all the way from Cape Town, South Africa.
Just so you know how far reaching your hard work goes.
Excelsior!
Wermeson says
Hi friend. if you can update the list so we can keep following. very grateful, excellent work here on the page. congratulations.
Michael says
I second this!
Bert says
How to the events like absolute carnage work? Do i read everything in linked full event guide then afterward continue on this list? Or just read whats included in this fresh start list? I’m new
Paul Warren says
i think the unstoppable wasp trade you linked to, girl power, is volume zero, which is 2017 #1-8, but i’m not seeing any fo the 2018 series here
melanyx says
I wish these posts had a last edited by date on them.
Matt says
Seconded.
Cahill says
Why is Ghost-Spider Volume 2: Party People on the list, but not Volume 1: Dog Days Are Over? What Spider TPBs are it set between?
Cahill says
also, where are Volumes 5 through 7 of Spider-Man 2099 on your reading orders?
Brayden Wayne Bastarache says
Where should I read Incoming?
André Oliveira says
What about Moon girl’s comics???
melanyx says
I think Moon Girl is her own entity for the most part (much like Squirrel Girl)… so I think it may be safe to just read on. If it’s a tie in, it’ll usually have a banner across the top.
Daniel Betancourt says
Are there any plans to update this list soon Dave?
Gustavo Castellanos says
When should I start reading the new Superior Spider-man series?
Mike says
I think it picks up in the aftermath of Spidergeddon. They do a little promo for Superior Spidey and MM:Spider-Man at the end of the last issue of Spidergeddon.
Mike says
Where does the Thanos ongoing fall into the marvel universe? I’ve noticed it’s not included in this reading order. What gives?
Fannar says
So do i have to read all the issues from avengers (the first one he/she says i should read first) and then go read thor or do i read the first one first and then go on to thor?
Fannar says
and do i read marvel legacy first?
Gopal says
Do I have to read all these books, couldn’t I just read Immortal Hulk if I only want to read on the Hulk? I’m really only interested in following this new hulk series, I don’t want to know the whole marvel fresh start universe.
Please help me out and reply whenever you get the chance.
Dave says
You can absolutely just read Immortal Hulk. Go for it! The book even does a great job explaining the history and continuity that builds to this point.
Gopal says
Okay thank you very much. That’s such a relief, I was trying to find a new series to read without any problem.
Scott S says
The end of Astonishing spoils the end of Extermination and mentions the premise of Mr. and Mrs. X, it might be worth moving it down just a little.
Ryan says
Hi, is there any updates to your fresh start list? Been waiting for the latest comics that have been released to be included here, thanks.
Finn says
The link to the punisher title you put in here is for the 2017 punisher. Shouldn’t it be for the fresh start punisher?
Daniel says
Absolutely love the lists you compile mate.
Without any of this i would have no idea where to even start reading, especially Marvel.
Keep it up pal.
Kristen says
Why is Marvel so much harder to start reading compared to DC? I know events, crossovers, and generally what is going on in dc. I know that rebirth happened and there was the new 52 before that. I know where to start reading for all the characters in DC, but somehow even after reading this, I still don’t know where to start with Marvel. Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man Vol. 5? I thought stuff started at Vol. 1.
John says
Not sure if you’ll see this, but the Vol you’re refrerring is the Volume of the Comic, not the Volume of the trade inside the comic. So every time that Spectacular Spider-man gets rebooted / Starts with a new Number 1, it’s a new Volume of that book. Hope that makes sense, Def read Chip’s Peter Parker : Spectacular Spider-Man
melanyx says
Some of these “fresh starts” are still continuations I think, but even say Squirrel Girl is at vol 10, each vol is usually a set story arc so sometimes you can just pick up a vol and start reading it no problem. And check the little notes they put in places that refers back/reminds you where whatever they’re referencing in the panel like “see: blah blah #9”
Timi says
It’s still just such a mess. They need a proper cleanse similar to DC’s Rebirth. I still have no idea where to begin or which universe or whatever. Baffling.
Ligan says
Where is the best place to buy physical copies of these issues?
Mark Kausch says
Couple of ways I can think of. Each book above (well, mostly) is published as a link. If you click on it it’ll take you to that book’s place on Amazon. I think Amazon only sells physical books, but I could be wrong. Read it carefully.
Another way is to visit your local comic shop. To find one, go here: https://www.comicshoplocator.com/Home/1/1/57/575 and enter your zip code.
Casey says
https://www.instocktrades.com/ is the site I use. They usually have pretty much any book you would want and their prices are usually a lot cheaper than Amazon.
Daniel Canning says
Where does infinity wars series fit into this? Along with avengers story series compared to the individual arcs like Iron man or captain America or captain marvel?
melanyx says
It’s in there now
Eric Sander says
where do i put X-men gold Vol.6?
Joe panno says
So please tell me how do the new Dr. Strange and Thor fall into continuity with the new Avengers?
Billy says
Hi,
I was trying to find a way to contact other than comments, but couldn’t find it.
I have a quick question about the Marvel Fresh Start list.
What signifies it’s part of the fresh start? How can I tell what’s what, or when they all are coming out? Is there an official list?
I just bought Avengers #1&2 and Venom #1 and Thor: Gates of Valhalla, but Marvel.com only shows a subset of what is listed here, so I was just curious about the difference.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I’d like to start purchasing this series as they come out.
Tan says
the wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Fresh_Start_(comics) has an up to date list with release dates of first issues. However, comics (cloak and dagger for example) have been announced right before being dropped so it’s easy to miss them, but just keep checking the wiki page every now and then and it’ll give you the full list, atm there are 22 releases I believe.
