So continues the series that does not want to die. This is also a book I cheer every time it comes out, because it has been a consistently funny and charming read. Following a group of C-level (at best) supervillains as they attempt to make a name for themselves in the Marvel underworld and achieve personal wealth and power. All along the way they stab each other in the back, lie through their teeth, and generally just can’t seem to get along. This series has shown that writer Nick Spencer can write very funny comedies when he’s allowed to just have fun with the world, including established serious characters (Dr. Doom anyone?). Steve Lieber also proves that he has great comedic timing when it comes to portraying the actions of the characters, the most notable example would be Mark 7’s attempts to maneuver out a window or around a room with his wings extended. Silver Surfer #5 Review! The End of a Five Issue Setup Arc
Dan Slott and Michael Allred’s run on Silver Surfer was one of my most anticipated books once it was announced. I loved the idea that Surfer was going to travel around the universe with a human companion as they explore a trippy Jack Kirbyesque version of the Marvel Galactic Universe. And while I’m not disappointed with with this run, I do wish it would pick up the pace a bit. Dan slott has spent the last four issues introducing the audience to the new character of Dawn Greenwood, and while that is not a bad thing seeing as Dawn is a likeable character, let me just say that this book has not quite reached the heights set by the Infinite Comic that Marvel released on Comixology around the time this book started. Avengers Undercover #9 Review! The End is Near for Marvel’s Most Underrated Title
And so we’ve reached the second to last issue of a story that’s been going on since the beginning of MARVEL NOW! A book that I have enjoyed and looked forward to every month since it began as Avengers Arena, sadly appears it’s going to end slightly ahead of schedule, and will not allow Dennis Hopeless to write his planned trilogy following these characters. Now that doesn’t mean that this series will have a complete non-ending, it just means Hopeless had to jettison some plot and character development to get to the end he add originally planned. This would explain the three month jump in issue 8. So seeing as I’m talking about the the second to last issue of a story that’s gone through two titles, this is not a jumping on point. Before I start, let me just say I HIGHLY recommend checking out the first trade of Avengers Arena, and onward from there. Now, Avengers Undercover #9. Ms. Marvel #7 Review! Yes, Gyros ARE Better Than Shawarma
What many people thought would be a gimmick title has quickly become one of Marvel’s most enjoyable books. Kamala Khan is a Palestinian/American who develops shape changing powers after the detonation of the Terrigen Bomb during the Infinity event. This book began with a five issue arc that established the character of Kamala, as well as her supporting cast, before delving into the world of capes and cowls. Ms. Marvel did not get her costume or really even her villain until the fifth issue. While it was surprising the pace that the series took, this was still a good thing for the story and the characters of the book. Now that all the introductions are out of the way, Ms. Marvel finally gets to participate in some costumed adventures. So, how well does this book transition from world-building to superhero action? Well, let’ see. [Read more…] about Ms. Marvel #7 Review! Yes, Gyros ARE Better Than Shawarma
Delinquents #1 Review! Hobo Kings, Butt Maps, and Evil Agriculture Companies
Before I get to the content of this issue, let me just say that if you have not read any of the Archer and Armstrong or Quantum and Woody comics that Valiant has been publishing the past couple of years, this is not the best entry point for either series. Now I don’t mean that in order to read this comic you need to be up-to-date with both series; all you need to read is the first arc of both books so you can understand the power sets, attitudes, and character relationships of both teams. You can sort of piece things together if this is your first exposure to these characters, but you will get the most out of this issue if you go into this already knowing everyone. I’m telling you this because I’m coming from someone who has read both books, so I’ll be reviewing this comic from that point of view. If you haven’t read either book, you can skip this issue. If you have read either (or preferably both) books, well lets get to that now. [Read more…] about Delinquents #1 Review! Hobo Kings, Butt Maps, and Evil Agriculture Companies
