Silver Surfer

Marvel Then: Silver Surfer by Dan Slott & The Allreds

June 25, 2022 by Yavi Mohan Leave a Comment

In October 2012, Marvel rebranded their entire line of comics under the “Marvel Now” banner, an era that would effectively last for three years until 2015’s Secret Wars. It’s a fan favorite era of comics, under the editorial reign of Axel Alonso, with titles like Hawkeye, Superior Spider-Man, Thor: God of Thunder, and Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers among many others.

2022 marks the 10 year anniversary of Marvel Now, so at Comic Book Herald, we’ll be looking back at the best, most interesting, or just downright most confounding Marvel Now titles. This is “Marvel Then.”

The Silver Surfer. Cool design, awesome concept, but the character? Norrin Radd himself? Maybe a little lacking in personality, right? Not due to bad writing, but rather the very point of the character when he was first introduced. He was the Herald of Galactus and the man who chose planets for the Devourer of Worlds to eat. Such a character had to be written as lacking in emotion; willing to let Earth be consumed, until finally persuaded otherwise by the sheer force of human good.

And so the characterization continued, even after the Surfer handed in his notice to the big planet-eating guy. When his emotions do come out, they normally take the form of melancholy, guilt, or all-encompassing cosmic rage. As a result, his stories also tended towards the reflective (no pun intended) and serious. A classic example would be Silver Surfer: Requiem by J. Michael Straczynski and Esad Ribic. Generally considered one of the finest works on the character, this miniseries dealt with the cheery concept of Radd confronting his imminent death.

The Best Silver Surfer Comics!

February 19, 2021 by Sara Century 1 Comment

Of the many co-creations of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Silver Surfer is one that was exceptionally close to Lee’s heart—he referred to the character as his personal philosophical outlet and a mouthpiece for many of his own observations on the human race. Indeed, Surfer’s removed, sensitive condemnation of the foolishness of humankind remains relatable to this day, and it brought out a seldom seen quietly emotional side to Lee’s writing that has continued to inform the character. All these many decades later, the Surfer remains almost completely unchanged from his foundational appearances. [Read more…] about The Best Silver Surfer Comics!

Marvel Cosmic Universe by Donny Cates Omnibus | Nothing the Matter with the Stars

January 2, 2021 by John Galati 1 Comment

Donny Cates is inarguably one of the hottest writers of this generation. His style is a sort of love letter to new and beautifully strange beginnings:

  • 60s Marvel, the company’s first rebirth full of hope and wonder
  • 90s Marvel, where Cates’ love for the medium seems to begin (or at least cement)
  • And Cates’ own, personal story, with all of its second chances

These elements return again and again in Cates’ work. They’re also why he’s such a natural fit for Marvel’s cosmic lines; his voice is so big, he really benefits from that scale. It seems only right he have a tome to match: Marvel Cosmic Universe by Donny Cates. [Read more…] about Marvel Cosmic Universe by Donny Cates Omnibus | Nothing the Matter with the Stars

Silver Surfer #5 Review! The End of a Five Issue Setup Arc

August 30, 2014 by Travis Bass Leave a Comment

Dan Slott and Michael Allred’s run on Silver Surfer was one of my most anticipated books once it was announced. I loved the idea that Surfer was going to travel around the universe with a human companion as they explore a trippy Jack Kirbyesque version of the Marvel Galactic Universe. And while I’m not disappointed with with this run, I do wish it would pick up the pace a bit. Dan slott has spent the last four issues introducing the audience to the new character of Dawn Greenwood, and while that is not a bad thing seeing as Dawn is a likeable character, let me just say that this book has not quite reached the heights set by the Infinite Comic that Marvel released on Comixology around the time this book started.
