Just Imagine… Stan Lee Creating The DC Universe, Vol. 2

February 11, 2021 by Sara Century Leave a Comment

When one thinks back on early aughts comic book curiosities, one prominent entry on the list might be Stan Lee’s Just Imagine… universe, in which he (and many, many artists) created a reimagining of the DC Universe by feeding Lee a basic premise and letting him go his own weird direction with the idea.

This shaky groundwork did not make for an especially groundbreaking series, and the issues have seldom been referenced since, with a few exceptions (every wild idea at DC comes back in a Grant Morrison comic at some point). Still, most things Lee was ever even remotely involved in are being recollected today, and so we’ve got a two-part trade that collects these wacky, wacky stories. We’re talking about the second volume of Just Imagine Stan Lee Creating the DC Universe here. [Read more…] about Just Imagine… Stan Lee Creating The DC Universe, Vol. 2

The Best of She-Hulk!

February 6, 2021 by Sara Century Leave a Comment

She-Hulk’s history has been a bit of a rocky road, one that’s gone in some wildly different directions over the years. To begin with, Jennifer Walters was plagued by the She-Hulk, and she struggled to define herself outside of her superpowered alter ego. By the end of her first series, she’d come to grips with the She-Hulk and actually preferred to stay in that form. She joined the Avengers and the Fantastic Four, and took on new, fourth-wall-breaking characteristics that would later be passed onto characters like Deadpool. This again led to a change of direction of Jennifer. She died multiple times, began and ended relationships, encountered alternate reality selves, and, most recently, saw a power surge that significantly changed her personality while in Hulk form.

Today, She-Hulk has a wider array of stories to look back on than ever before, but she continues to exist at the whims of greater crossover events. Still, with a new TV series on the horizon, it feels like a great time to look back at some of the hidden gems and greatest hits of She-Hulk’s long history.

Eternals: To Defy the Apocalypse

January 31, 2021 by Sara Century Leave a Comment

The Eternals is easily one of Marvel’s most neglected properties, which is why when announcements for a film version of the comic began circulating, they were usually accompanied by comments like “who the heck are they?” Yet there’s no denying that many of the biggest names in the industry have worked on Eternals stories, from Jack Kirby all the way to Neil Gaiman and beyond. In fact, Kirby created the Eternals after his Fourth World properties were prematurely canceled due to poor sales, which left countless unresolved plotlines for future writers to go wild with. Sadly, this formula was repeated almost to the letter with the likewise canceled Eternals, but, as with Fourth World, the legacy continues on. [Read more…] about Eternals: To Defy the Apocalypse

The Best of the Scarlet Witch!

January 16, 2021 by Sara Century 1 Comment

Despite making hundreds of appearances in Marvel comics over many decades, Wanda Maximoff is a difficult character to make a best-of list for. Even a serious Wanda fan will find themselves pressed. There are huge swaths of Avengers lore in which she’s either quietly hanging out in the background or the emphasis is on her relationship with The Vision or her complicated dynamic with Magneto and Quicksilver.

In short, most of Wanda’s stories aren’t really her own, including many of the ones that are important to read to understand her evolution. There are many stories like Avengers Disassembled, which changed the course of her life forever, but in which she barely makes an appearance. Here, we’ve left out some of the more infamous Wanda stories to emphasize those that give a better idea of who she is and what makes her tick. [Read more…] about The Best of the Scarlet Witch!

The Great Pretenders: Looking Back at the Scarlet Witch in Uncanny Avengers

January 15, 2021 by Sara Century Leave a Comment

As the Disney+ series WandaVision is released, Comic Book Herald critics will explore Wanda Maximoff’s comic book history, and where the character may be going moving forward, in an ongoing weekly series we’re calling “The Great Pretenders: What To Do With Marvel’s Scarlet Witch?!”

Wanda Maximoff’s fall from grace was more gradual than is generally acknowledged, but for our purposes, it mostly took place through the stories Avengers Disassembled, House of M, and Decimation. After causing countless calamities with her infamous “no more mutants” line, an amnesiac Wanda ended up in Wundagore, then engaged to Doctor Doom in Latveria, before regaining her memories in The Children’s Crusade.

As such, though Wanda seemed to be on a path to healing as far back as 2010, it’s been quite an uphill battle. As recently as the Empyre crossover, her mix of good intentions with an apparent inability to take prudent advice once again combined to create catastrophe, which could leave a lot of fans wondering if she learned anything at all in the many years that took place between these arcs. The answer to that, of course, is – kind of. It’s complicated. [Read more…] about The Great Pretenders: Looking Back at the Scarlet Witch in Uncanny Avengers
