For the first time since Avengers: Endgame we know what the outline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will look like through 2021. In a blend of unmitigated excitement and reaction to 8 million requests for related reading orders (which I have for every Phase 4 movie outlined! Given the nature of Comic Book Herald, I’m regularly thinking about “on ramps” for new comics readers. This is the premise for My Marvelous Year, the reading club and podcast where we go through the most essential storylines in Marvel history, year by year.
For a significantly more streamlined approach, though, I thought it would be fun to craft a “one book per week” read through Marvel’s now 80 year timeline. To be fair, I also think it’s fun to pick my favorite single years in Marvel publishing history by decade and to organize the entire convoluted history of Hawkman, so clearly I can’t be trusted. Marvel’s been in a hot seat of their own making since the conclusion of Secret Wars (and really before then, considering they illogically launched “All-New All-Different” Marvel *prior* to the universe-shattering event’s conclusion. Despite their ability to reign as the leading market share publisher throughout a turbulent time, there’s no question Marvel *knows* they’re in need of a new perception.
