Comixology

What Hath Thou Wrought, Comixology?

February 21, 2022 by Dave 5 Comments

Several months back, Comixology’s affiliate linking partner began emailing participants (including yours truly!), that the Comixology affiliate program would shut down in the coming months, as the website migrated in full to Amazon. While a mild inconvenience for a strapping young webmaster like myself, this was hardly shocking, as Amazon purchased Comixology back in 2014, and it’s honestly surprising Comixology operated as its own entity as long as it did.

This rollout was delayed (spoiler: all rollouts are delayed), but came to fruition this past week. In and of itself, this would have generated the predictable levels of dissatisfaction that happens with any technology changing, but Comixology managed to actually shock by combining the migration with a full-on upheaval of their entire product. What I took to be a minor shift was instead accompanied by a full app overhaul, a desktop reader overhaul, Comixology Unlimited changes, and virtually every feature changed – predominantly for the worse – in one form or another.

In short, it’s the single most universally reviled technology shift I’ve ever seen in digital comics, and one of the most confusing instances of a self-inflicted wound since Plaxico Burress.

So, here we are, to explore what did Comixology do, what does it mean for comics fans, and is it as bad as everyone’s saying on social media? [Read more…] about What Hath Thou Wrought, Comixology?

The Best Tablets For Reading Comics & Manga: 2023 Edition!

January 12, 2021 by Dave 69 Comments

It’s clearer than ever that tablets are the perfect digital comic book reading option. There’s also no doubt that subscription comics services like Comixology, Shonen Jump (Manga), DC Universe Infinite and Marvel Unlimited have made it easier than ever to read comic books digitally.

What’s less clear is what type of tablet or e-reader you should consider for your comics consumption. Do you invest in a sleek 10 inch tablet? What about a mini tablet to save a few dollars? Could you stick to a laptop, desktop or phone? And what about non-Apple or Android options like Kindle or Windows Surface? What Do Comics Sales Numbers Mean?

June 27, 2019 by John Galati Leave a Comment

It has become downright common to see people — actual, human beings — quoting sales figures in online discussions. Go on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, anywhere and say how you feel about a book. Any book. Eventually, someone will come by to tell you its ComiChron ranking. They’ll point to Comixology’s download figures, or they’ll reference a YouTuber waving a number over their head.

But what does any of this mean? And should anyone actually care? [Read more…] about What Do Comics Sales Numbers Mean?

Comixology Unlimited Review! Is It Worth It? What Should You Read?

May 29, 2016 by Dave 11 Comments

Comixology shocked the comics world (and plenty of creators) this week with the announcement of Comixology Unlimited, the digital comics answer to Marvel Unlimited, Spotify, Netflix, and subscription library services.

The promise of a “Netflix for Comics,” spread across various publishers and genres has been the holy grail of digital comics readers about as long as I can remember (I have long-term memory issues). Is Comixology Unlimited the answer to all our comics bingeing prayers?

What’s The Best Service For “All You Can Eat” Digital Comics Today?

May 25, 2016 by Dave 10 Comments

When I was a boy, we used to walk uphill, barefoot and naked even, right in the snow both ways (!) on our way to the local comic shop. For decades, you really had one option for comic book reading – You pull out your 35 cents (This was never my price, but price increases in the 70’s were outrageous!) and you get your floppy comic book.
