I’ll admit I was not a fan of “Batman: Eternal” when it first came out. I knew it was another ploy to get me to pay $3.99 a week for a rushed comic. For those of you who don’t know, the storyline for this weekly (one year) series is horribly generic. Commissioner Gordon is framed for causing the death of several hundred people on a subway while gang wars break out throughout Gotham. Batman must race against the clock with the help of Jay Bard (a new addition to GCPD) to save his friend and protect the city. To me, it sounded like a revamp of the Batman: Animated Series episode “Shadow of the Bat” where Two-Face and Lt. Gil Mason frame Gordon for bribery. Old-School X-Men with Lincoln Crisler: Uncanny X-Men #196
After last week’s lackluster (in my humble, and frequently-refuted, opinion, of course) issue featuring the Power Pack, Claremont gets us back on track with an X-Men issue that’s about…you know…the X-Men. Uncanny #196, with art by Romita, Jr. and Green, opens with Professor X teaching, not his mutant proteges, but a psychology class at Columbia University. His telepathy kicks in and he “hears” one of his students thinking about killing someone. Despite the efforts of the Morlocks’ Healer, however, he’s still not completely recovered from the beating he took a few issues back, and he doesn’t feel capable of scanning the entire lecture hall to figure out exactly who’s plotting murder in their mind. This week’s issue of Superior Spider-Man is — wait, hold up. Didn’t that series end, you ask incredulously, losing faith in me with every word? You are right, astute reader, but read on!
