AVENGERS & X-MEN: AXIS #7 Review: “New World Retcon!”

December 14, 2014 by Matt Lehn 1 Comment

Marvel’s current event series Avengers & X-Men: Axis has been an uneven affair to date and the most recent issue is no exception. In fact, “End The Line” stands as something of a microcosm survey to the point. While wildly ambitious, writer Rick Remender’s story has had a hard time finding its legs overall. Part of this may be due to his script calling for perpetual erosion that may ultimately prove too self-sabotaging. Part of this may be due to the rotating cast of artists that, despite their collective awesomeness, hasn’t yielded a consistent look for the title. Regardless of the mechanics, the finish is often less than satisfying. [Read more…] about AVENGERS & X-MEN: AXIS #7 Review: “New World Retcon!”

“AVENGERS & X-MEN: AXIS #5: This Side Up”

November 15, 2014 by Matt Lehn Leave a Comment

As writer Rick Remender’s Marvel event story crosses the halfway mark, issue 5 yields a surprisingly uneven reading experience. Opening and closing on a couple of high-impact beats, it also mechanically carves a wheel-spinning valley right down the middle. [Read more…] about “AVENGERS & X-MEN: AXIS #5: This Side Up”

AVENGERS & X-MEN: AXIS #3 Review! Good News For People Who Love Bad Guys

October 25, 2014 by Matt Lehn Leave a Comment

The opening act of Marvel’s latest event series, Avengers & X-Men: Axis, concludes this week. While to date the story has not been shy about pronouncing its “everything AND the kitchen sink” approach, it really ascends to a whole other level this issue. Functionally, it’s nothing short of a twenty-odd page affirmation to the classic Dr. Peter Venkman-ism espousing “cats and dogs living together… mass hysteria!”. The parallel to the Ghostbusters quote being that “Good News for Bad People” plays exceeding well as comedy delivered in the face of impending doom. Metaphoric feline/canine co-mingling and all. Review: Hobgoblin #1 – Axis Tie-In……yawn

October 24, 2014 by Jeff Ayers Leave a Comment

Well, here’s another sentence I didn’t think I would ever write: I just finished reading Hobgoblin #1. This is going to be a three part mini, spiraling out of the events of the Marvel spanning Avengers and X-Men crossover event, AXIS. I did not expect much going into this book, and I got pretty much all that in return. [Read more…] about Review: Hobgoblin #1 – Axis Tie-In……yawn

Avengers & X-Men: Axis #2 Review! It’s All Your Fault Tony Stark

October 17, 2014 by Travis Bass Leave a Comment

Two issues in, and we already get a giant battle between a demon Nazi with two giant robots and a large percentage of Marvel’s biggest characters. Apparently Rick Remender didn’t get the message that Marvel events are supposed to hold back on anything exciting until the last issue (or maybe last two), and the rest of the event is meant to promise that something cool is coming like they’re dangling a shiny object in front of our faces. Anyway, Axis began on a good if not spectacular note, but how does the second issue continue the tale of Red Onslaught’s rampage? [Read more…] about Avengers & X-Men: Axis #2 Review!
