U.S. Agent: American Zealot Review!

June 24, 2021 by Jay Rincher Leave a Comment

Described by writer Christopher Priest as, “a morality play in five acts” U.S.Agent: American Zealot, follows the adventures of John Walker, the titular U.S.Agent after he’s been booted from the role and demoted to government contractor status. Deployed as a joke, Walker is tasked with securing a top-secret facility hidden beneath a destitute former coal town.

What should be a routine ‘bag and secure’ mission, quickly spirals out of control as Walker is confronted with his estranged younger sister, Kate – lost in the witness protection system after the murder of their parents – now a goverment agent, and April Manning, a billionaire who has used his wealth to purchase himself access to real power: a new iteration of the super-soldier serum and with it, the ability to reshape America into his perfect vision of the country.

The series is framed using the device of residents of Ephraim, West Virginia, being interviewed about the aftermath of John Walker’s visit to the town. Ephraim is a town devastated by the closure of its coal mine. A glimmer of hope arises in the building of a Virago Distribution center (our tale’s Amazon stand-in) – but the conglomerate flies in its workforce and builds its own private power plant. None of the wealth it generates flows back into the community.

Some residents take matters into their own hands and blow up the distribution center’s power plant, unaware of its top secret status. They’re overjoyed when Walker arrives – he’s dressed in the flag, he’s got the shield, he’s Captain America. And they sincerely think he’s going to help them take the fight to the man. How to (Re)Read the Hickman Era of X-Men: Arguments for a Nation (House of X #6)

June 23, 2021 by David Bowen Leave a Comment

As usual, Larraz’s cover work is stunning. The choice of figures is interesting but hard to parse: Is there some commonality between Storm, Exodus, and Emma? Exodus’ presence here and throughout this issue is subtly provocative, but to what end—who can say? Otherwise, what we see is presumably another moment of Krakoan celebration, with MC Storm helping shape the celebrating Krakoans’ emotions. There are celebrants high above among the gargantuan trees, in what keeps me thinking of an Ewok village. The sky, though, is eerily red: An ominous portent?

Tales From the DC Dark Multiverse II Review

June 17, 2021 by Sean Dillon Leave a Comment

In 1985, DC Comics began publishing an event comic known as Crisis on Infinite Earths. Written by Marv Wolfman with art by George Pérez, the comic detailed the collapse of the DC Multiverse into a single universe. One where Superheroes were a relatively new idea with Wonder Woman only coming into play at the then modern day. All the imaginary stories, all the alternate earths were discarded in favor of the single vision of what the DC Universe should be.

In contrast, Marvel Comics has an occasional series known as What If…? wherein readers are presented with an alternate version of events where things work out differently. In some, we are presented with worlds where the worst-case scenario goes horribly for everyone while in others that worst-case actually leads to a better world. Some What Ifs take on major events like the Death of Gwen Stacy or Captain America coming into the modern-day. Others take minor things like giving a boy a Sentinel or pondering if Bruce Banner was the monster and the Hulk a good man. But with all of these stories (the best at least), even in the bleaker narratives where the Nazis win and domestic abusers go unpunished, there is a sense that this was the only way it could have gone, even if we know alternatives exist. Loki on Disney Plus: Episode One Review & Theories!

June 12, 2021 by Comic Book Herald Staff Leave a Comment

Following up on the hype-machine success of WandaVision, and the muddled reactions to SamCap and the Winter Soldier, Marvel’s Disney+ TV continues with 2021’s Loki, starring Tom Hiddleston. Loki picks up directly after 2012-Loki uses the cosmic cube in Avengers: Endgame, and escapes during the Avengers Time-Heist.

There’s a fair amount riding on Loki, as the MCU tries to cement their place as the essential big and small screen pop culture experience. We dig into the first episode of the six episode series, and talk all things gods of mischief, Time Variance Authority, and what the role of Loki might be in the MCU from here! Is the Nick Spencer Run on Amazing Spider-Man… Good?

June 11, 2021 by Sean Dillon 5 Comments

No.

A picture containing text Description automatically generated

Though, in its defense, the main Amazing Spider-Man title hasn’t been consistently good since Peter Parker was possessed by the ghost of Doctor Octopus (though, even then, that run was hobbled by Dan Slott’s inclination towards mediocrity and continuity fetishism); and it hasn’t been consistently great since the ’90s. There are many reasons for this, from an inexplicable notion that Spider-Man is a character who has to function like a teenager (I blame John Byrne) to the far more understandable (if still depressing) notion that Peter Parker must be a straight white guy who suffers for our sins (I blame Sam Rami).

* Spoilers for the run to date follow *
