When I was but a wee spider-lad, my roving gang of pre-teen friends thought it would be fun to sit front row for the opening of Spider-Man, the new film by Sam Raimi starring Toby Maguire. I knew nothing of Maguire, and even less of Raimi, but I knew I loved the 90’s Spider-Man Animated Series, and was thrilled to find that movie Spider-Man brought some semblance of that action, melodrama, and Peter Parker to the screen. After five Spider-Man movies (and a Captain America 3: Civil War appearance), the Vulture’s finally ready to make his first cinematic appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Sure, good old Adrian Toomes was reportedly going to be played by John Malkovich in the apocryphal Spider-Man 4 (directed by Sam Raimi), but the wait for Michael Keaton and Iron Man cameos appears to have been worth it.

Concluding his five-part “Spiral” storyline, veteran Spider-scribe Gerry Conway takes the wall crawler on yet another run around the endless loop of power and responsibility. Plagued with a few logical disconnects and some murky depictions, it’s an entertaining enough ride but like any carnival loop-de-loop, it’s maybe best not to stare too closely into the gears of the machine. Amazing Spider-Man #14! Spider-Verse: Part Six! Not exactly the final chapter, not exactly part six, especially considering all of the various tie-ins. Here we are at the end, and while none of the loose ends get tied up, the story finally comes to the part that English teachers would call the Climax.
