Creannotators #100: “Judgment Day” / “Immortal X-Men” Interview with Kieron Gillen!

November 22, 2022 by Dave Leave a Comment

I sit down to talk with Kieron Gillen about Marvel’s Judgment Day event and Immortal X-Men! We discuss the keys to a good crossover event, Kieron’s plans for the X-Men, the upcoming Sins of Sinister, and a lot more!

On Comic Book Herald’s ‘Creannotators’ I’ll be interviewing some of my favorite creators in comics about specific runs, graphic novels or series, looking for their insights on the inspirations behind the work and ideas or hidden material readers may have missed. Creannotators is an audio annotative guide to enjoying the intricacies and thinking in the art. Thanks for listening, and enjoy the comics!

Who Watched the Watchmen? The Wicked and the Divine

September 1, 2022 by Ben Johnson 1 Comment

It is often said that Watchmen is the most influential comic ever to be released. That comics wouldn’t be where they are without it, for good and for ill. But how did we get here, exactly? More to the point, just what influence did Watchmen provide to the larger world of comics? What, ultimately, is the legacy of Watchmen? Who watched the Watchmen?

A member of a group of famous and powerful super beings is involved in a mysterious incident and is later murdered. Their death kicks off a series of events that draws attention to the group’s motives and their history, revealing a conspiracy that divides the group and forces the surviving members to reevaluate the role they play in our contemporary society and how they have used their power and position in the world. Sure, this could be a Cliff’s Notes summary of Watchmen. But it’s also a broad strokes overview of Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie’s captivating series, The Wicked + The Divine, which explores the price one must pay for fame and adulation, and what to expect when a whole bunch of horny, hormonal teenagers become hosts for horny, hormonal gods who have been reincarnated in the 21st century. Kieron Gillen Star Wars Retrospective

July 2, 2019 by Matt Lehn Leave a Comment

Not gonna lie, this piece is late. Truthfully, I don’t think a part of me wanted to write it because that would mean accepting the end of an era. So, for the last two weeks, I’ve apparently been wrestling with living in a world that is post-Kieron Gillen Star Wars comics. [Read more…] about Kieron Gillen Star Wars Retrospective

SIEGE #1 Review: “Catch Twenty-Doom!”

July 19, 2015 by Matt Lehn Leave a Comment

Winding down assignments from the publisher, writer Kieron Gillen creates an unlikely yet compelling ensemble of cherry-picked Marvel properties from his personal catalog. Instead of resting on well-earned laurels and churning out a self-congratulatory novelty book, Gillen smartly positions his “Greatest Hits” as one of the most integral Secret Wars spin-offs. X-Men Chronology: The Kieron Gillen run

September 17, 2014 by Thomas Bacon 1 Comment

Continuing my X-Men chronology, this week I want to explore a range that I personally feel is overlooked a little; Kieron Gillen’s run on ‘Uncanny X-Men’.  Gillen took the reins of ‘Uncanny X-Men’ at a time of crisis for the mutant race, and – like his ‘Generation Hope’ series – he propelled the series like an arrow to the target of ‘AvX’.
