It’s the end of an era for Marvel Television as it’s existed since Netflix Daredevil season one debuted in 2015. In the wake of the news that Kevin Feige’s taking over as Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer (see also: The One Above All!), Godfather style executions have started rolling out across the Marvel TV landscape. Netflix output is already dead, but we’ve also now seen Hulu’s “horror” line, Cloak and Dagger, and Jeph Loeb’s tenure as head of Marvel TV on their way out. Sure, Stumptown is a new show on ABC-TV but like so much else in mass entertainment these days, it also has a life in comic book format. Originally debuting in late 2009 as a four-issue mini by Oni Press, Stumptown is the creation of writer Greg Rucka and artist Matthew Southworth. What do you want from a follow-up to Avengers: Endgame? Historically, Marvel has followed up the biggest most game-changing events in the MCU with lighter comedies or character introductions (Ant Man & The Wasp, Doctor Strange). The reaction has been a mix of praise (this mint after a heavy meal is exactly what was needed!) and resignation (well, I guess not every story can be the biggest one ever told).
For my money, the MCU’s never needed a transition film with a sense of purpose as strongly as Spider-Man: Far From Home. The entire MCU has come to as close to an ending as a comic book storytelling perpetual motion machine can come.
