The 55 Best Marvel Comics of the 1980s

December 29, 2020 by Dave 4 Comments

The 1980’s are considered a highwater mark for Marvel Comics by many readers, with a number of all-time classic runs, stories, and new characters. On multiple occasions, when asked where readers should start with Marvel Comics, or when picking the best decade long stretch in Marvel Comics history, I’ve found myself recommending much of the 80’s to Comic Book Herald readers.

As we wrap up our coverage of the decade in the My Marvelous Year podcast/reading club, I’ve put together a list of my picks for the best Marvel Comics in the 1980s. Since the MMY club reads through Marvel year-by-year, I’ve sorted various runs into the selection of comics we read for the club, rather than literally all of Walt Simonson’s Thor as one entry, or even all of the issues of Thor per publication year. December 25, 2020 by Sara Century 1 Comment

Where to even begin with Diana Princess of Themyscira? This is one of the most recognizable heroes in the world, with an incredible eighty-year legacy behind her. That said, it can sometimes feel like Wonder Woman is only just beginning to get the credit she is due. There have been a lot of ups and downs in this Amazing Amazon’s history, but this is a character that has helped define modern storytelling in some pretty profound ways over the years. Though there are countless more great Wonder Woman stories than can fit in a single article, here are some of the very best. [Read more…] about The Greatest Wonder Woman Stories of All Time!

The Greatest Aquaman Stories of All Time!

December 18, 2020 by Zoe Tunnell 2 Comments

Aquaman is great. Well, okay, he actually kind of sucks, but that is why he is great. In a universe full of noble heroes, tortured vigilantes, and paragons of justice, Arthur Curry is an angry dude with a crown. He’s a hero, of course, and does the best he can, but the King of Atlantis is, at his heart, a man thrust between two worlds he will never fully belong to and can barely keep it together most of the time. Lord of the Seven Seas, off-and-on monarch over 70% of the world’s surface, and hopeless romantic. Arthur Curry ain’t a normal, charming superheroic lead, and that has led to a lot of confusion over who the hell Aquaman is and why you should care. That’s where I come in. So, here’s the 10 Best Aquaman Stories of All Time to clear things up!

The Greatest Suicide Squad Stories of All Time!

December 11, 2020 by Zoe Tunnell 1 Comment

The Suicide Squad! One of the most obnoxiously brilliant ideas in comics, supervillains forced to do heroic missions under threat of death, is a beloved classic within the DC Universe. Well. Sort of. While the original run in the 1980s, courtesy of John Ostrander and many artistic partners, is considered one of the all-time greats of superhero comics, the team’s track record outside of Ostrander’s care is…hit or miss. With James Gunn’s revamped The Suicide Squad on the way next year, it seems like the perfect time to point out the most remarkable stories in the team’s history for you to check out ahead of the movie. At the very least, they won’t be as bad as that first flick. [Read more…] about The Greatest Suicide Squad Stories of All Time!
