Batman Swallowing His Own Cape: The Modern Caped Crusader’s Narrative Autocannibalism

January 29, 2022 by David Mann 4 Comments

“Rest in peace, Batman!”

The story of Batman ended about ten years ago with Christopher Nolan and Grant Morrison.

That’s the sort of thesis statement you either spend an entire thinkpiece dancing around to set up or you frontload, looking like a maniac completely divorced from cultural and commercial reality and having to explain yourself to whoever’s left reading at the end of the article. But I stand by that statement: What we’ve been watching and reading for the past decade has been the (extremely lucrative) post-flatline flailings of a corpse whose brain hasn’t stopped firing neurons yet. Victory did, in fact, defeat him. [Read more…] about Batman Swallowing His Own Cape: The Modern Caped Crusader’s Narrative Autocannibalism

All That They Are, All That They Will Be: Grant Morrison’s Supermen in Retrospect

October 26, 2021 by David Mann Leave a Comment

For their first DC publication – Superman Official 1986 Annual – Grant Morrison wrote Osgood Peabody’s Big Green Dream Machine, a prose story with illustrations by Barry Kitson and Jeff Anderson, where a gang of criminals attempt to discern Superman’s vulnerabilities by peering into his dreams. Seeing fields of bones and assuming they represent a fear of death on the part of the invincible man, the crooks attempt to intimidate him, only to learn they had been tricked and were instead picking up the super-brainwaves of Krypto the Superdog. “And as Superman led Osgood and the others away, the air rang with the sound of his laughter.” The notion of Superman exposed to decay, to time, to failure? A punchline.

35 years later, the extended admission to the contrary that is Superman and The Authority was announced as Morrison’s final DC work. [Read more…] about All That They Are, All That They Will Be: Grant Morrison’s Supermen in Retrospect

The Old 52: Superman Unchained – Lost In The Darkness

July 27, 2021 by David Mann 2 Comments

Remember how Scott Snyder (emerging into the height of his popularity) and Jim Lee (in his final longform comics project) launched a new Superman ongoing for the character’s 75th anniversary? Remember how it was unceremoniously demoted to a nine issue miniseries (over the course of eighteen months) because by the end no one much cared, and now it’s almost entirely forgotten? Have you ever really let that set of facts sit in your head in all its plain absurdity? [Read more…] about The Old 52: Superman Unchained – Lost In The Darkness

Netflix’s Jupiter’s Legacy Review Roundtable!

May 10, 2021 by David Mann 5 Comments

Ritesh Babu: So, Jupiter’s Legacy, the first of the upcoming wave of Millarworld media works. The big launch of an IP-farm that Netflix spent 50 million on and bought, only to have Millar helm it and run it for them on top of that. This is his self-proclaimed masterpiece. His apparent magnum opus. His sprawling mega-epic, which spans and touches everything he’s ever wanted to express. So, folks, what do we think of this damn thing?
