DC’s 2021 Review Part 2: Future State, Infinite Frontier, & Fear State

February 4, 2022 by Nathan Payson Leave a Comment

1.2.0: This Year in Comics

2021 featured three big picture moments. The year opened with Future State, a two-month event that gave readers a sneak peek into the future. Then DC began their soft reboot with Infinite Frontier #0, which spun out into various series and the event mini-series Infinite Frontier by Joshua Williamson. At the end of the year, the Batman family came together for a big story combining the past year’s Gotham plot threads from Fear State. Each of these 2021 events had positives and negatives, but overall they reminded fans of what the DC universe can be. DC’s 2021 Review Part 1: The Overview

January 31, 2022 by Nathan Payson 2 Comments

1.0.0 The Overview

2021 was a fresh start for DC Comics. With a new soft reboot, DC made choices that led to CNN interviews and stories of fans returning to comics after decades away. This year has been full of great moments and the ire of Fox News, but what about DC as a whole? [Read more…] about DC’s 2021 Review Part 1: The Overview

The Joker’s “Last” Laugh In The Clown Prince Of Crime

November 29, 2021 by Sara Century 1 Comment

The Joker has undergone significant change over the course of his history, but one thing that a lot of modern fans might not know is that he was genuinely terrifying dating all the way back to day one. His first appearance in Batman #1 makes no qualms when it comes to portraying him as a remorseless killer, taking the haunting visual imagery from director Paul Leni’s silent masterpiece The Man Who Laughs (1928) and twisting the once-heroic jester portrayed by Conrad Veidt into a murderer with a penchant for elaborate showmanship.

In the comics of the mid-’50s, the Batline had been steered away from the occasionally grisly content of the early days towards more family-friendly fare in response to the birth of the Comics Code. Likewise, the campy fun of Batman ‘66 had become the definitive take on the character in popular culture. Regardless, the Joker has more or less remained a horror across the decades, and when writers began once more to embrace mature themes, he was one of the first to step up the brutality. The Joker: Clown Prince of Crime (1975) shows us a criminal mastermind with a callous disregard for life, regardless of whether or not Batman happens to be around to see it or not.

Discusses The Joker: Clown Prince of Crime #1-10 [Read more…] about The Joker’s “Last” Laugh In The Clown Prince Of Crime

The Other History of the DC Universe Review!

August 20, 2021 by Jay Rincher Leave a Comment

The Other History of the DC Universe is an interesting little project. Part social history, part love letter, part fanfiction – and I don’t mean that derisively. One of the strongest (and depending on who you ask, most problematic) aspects of fan fiction as a medium is the tendency to obsess over the moments where canonical works might cut away. Sometimes this tendency can produce some eye-rolling moments, but the same all encompassing love that inspires someone to write about what Sulu was doing while Kirk and Spock were down on Talos IV, is dripping from every issue of this series. If you pick up nothing else from reading this series it’s that John Ridley absolutely loves DC Comics. [Read more…] about The Other History of the DC Universe Review!

The Suicide Squad – A Gruesome Ode to the Outcast

August 11, 2021 by Matt Draper Leave a Comment

Even the lowliest of creatures have purpose in the world.

In a nutshell, that’s the driving idea behind James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad – a return to the deadly adventures of Task Force X and one of the goriest, most subversive, most heartfelt comic book movies ever made. [Read more…] about The Suicide Squad – A Gruesome Ode to the Outcast
