Kelly Sue Deconnick’s Captain Marvel in Review!

Ask any comic book fan worth their weight in longboxes about “definitive runs” and you will undoubtedly get a list of heavy-hitting collections that they can rattle off in their sleep. It’s sure to include such obvious gold standards as Chris Claremont’s marathon work on X-Men, Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing, and the solo writer-artist breakouts of Frank Miller (Daredevil) and Walt Simonson (Thor).

Essentially, it’s a pretty tight club and it doesn’t seem like they take a lot of new members. To be fair, it’s not everyday you get to see that sort of endeavor. Carol Danvers was, up until very recently, one of Marvel’s most unsung heroes with a story that’s had more rewrites, retcons, rebrandings, and reboots than I care to count. But somehow, through it all, Ms. Danvers has always managed to fight her way back from the brink. That’s a big part of who she is as a character, both the insecurity and the will to overcome.
