Comic Con Revolution Chicago 2019

Now that I am a certified press member who attends comic cons regularly (… Twice. I’ve done this twice) I’ve been thinking more about what it is that I’m looking to get from attending a comic book convention.

I attended Comic Con Revolution in Chicago this past weekend (technically in Rosemont, Illinois), and given the smaller scale of the show compared to the massive C2E2, there was a lot more emphasis on this question. What do I expect from a con? At C2E2 there’s so much razzle dazzle I didn’t necessarily need to address this question much (oh look at the shiny David Tennant!), but CCR and shows of a similar or smaller size bring it to the forefront.

Steve Englehart is one of the great, unsung heroes of the Bronze Age. Englehart got his start as a member of the Crusty Bunkers (a team of largely uncredited artists who helped out at Neal Adams’ studio), where his official role was as a proofreader, although Englehart has said he coscripted stories for Eeire as well as Marvel work like Sgt. Marvel Comics Without Movies (Options for the Future of the MCU!)

It’s only been a few short weeks since the release of Avengers: Endgame and, as expected, speculation is huge as to what comes next. Certainly, there’s already some definite franchises to anchor the MCU into Phase 4 and beyond. However, for as much bankability of, say, a Black Panther 2 or the already-announced intentions for a live-action Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu, there’s still a ton of Marvel properties that have yet to be translated into a filmed medium.

Avengers: Endgame Review!

There’s a part of me that buys into the idea – the non-controversial idea – that good stories have endings. This defies my love of superhero comics because the whole shared universe promise is that these stories never actually end. There are exceptions of course (this is why it was such a big deal when Hellboy comics ended this month after 25 years), with breaks for creative runs and conclusions to arcs within the larger tapestry, but endings are for elseworlds and alternate timelines. Avengers are Forever.
