Magneto rules, y’all. I would say he is the best villain in comics, but slotting him into a strictly villainous role does him a disservice. The mutant master of magnetism has been everything from a cackling murderous despot to a kind, understanding mentor to the next generation of his people. Given his nearly 60-year history, it is tough to narrow down the best stories starring Erik Lensherr (or Max Eisnerhardt, or Magnus depending on which stories are currently in continuity). The Best Tim Drake (Robin) Comics!
Tim Drake is a complicated character. Not much in terms of continuity, not usually (side eyeing the New 52), but in terms of legacy. While Tim was very much the heir apparent to the Robin mantle after Jason Todd died, he reinvented it and made that name his own. Once Damian Wayne took over the role, Tim has been in a limbo ever since. Coincidentally a number of the best Tim Drake stories interrogate his identity and legacy within the Batman mythos in interesting ways. The Best DC Comics of 2020 (So Far)!
It’s entirely possible that history will look back at 2020 (and history will have plenty of reason to look back on this year) as the year that broke DC Comics. It’s definitely too early to proclaim absolute doom with unwavering certainty, but for the first time in a very long time, the future of DC Comics as a publishing entity – as one half of comics Big 2 – is in serious doubt.
Tremendous layoffs struck DC Comics in August 2020, as the effects of the ATT / Warner Brothers merger fully materialized. The publishing line was gutted, and despite Jim Lee’s efforts to assuage concerns that this is the end of DC Comics, there’s little use denying the publisher won’t be the same for some time.
