Marvel’s been in a hot seat of their own making since the conclusion of Secret Wars (and really before then, considering they illogically launched “All-New All-Different” Marvel *prior* to the universe-shattering event’s conclusion. Despite their ability to reign as the leading market share publisher throughout a turbulent time, there’s no question Marvel *knows* they’re in need of a new perception. Since his creation a scant eight years ago, Miles Morales has quickly become one of the most interesting new Marvel characters. The Best New Image Comics of 2018
There’s a prevailing sense this year that Image Comics has stalled, and it’s not hard to see why. Breakout mega hits like Saga and Walking Dead are either on hiatus or well past the thrill of feeling new.
Likewise, juggernaut series (and some of my all-time favorite comics) Invincible and Kill or Be Killed officially concluded this year. Toss in some great ones that are steadily meandering through exciting long arcs (East of West, Sex Criminals, Black Monday Murders), and the creator-owned publishing haven doesn’t seem as hot as it has in years past. Despite their status as founding Avengers, Ant-Man and Wasp remain the perpetual underdogs of Marvel heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
