Tales From the DC Dark Multiverse II Review

June 17, 2021 by Sean Dillon Leave a Comment

In 1985, DC Comics began publishing an event comic known as Crisis on Infinite Earths. Written by Marv Wolfman with art by George Pérez, the comic detailed the collapse of the DC Multiverse into a single universe. One where Superheroes were a relatively new idea with Wonder Woman only coming into play at the then modern day. All the imaginary stories, all the alternate earths were discarded in favor of the single vision of what the DC Universe should be.

In contrast, Marvel Comics has an occasional series known as What If…? wherein readers are presented with an alternate version of events where things work out differently. In some, we are presented with worlds where the worst-case scenario goes horribly for everyone while in others that worst-case actually leads to a better world. Some What Ifs take on major events like the Death of Gwen Stacy or Captain America coming into the modern-day. Others take minor things like giving a boy a Sentinel or pondering if Bruce Banner was the monster and the Hulk a good man. But with all of these stories (the best at least), even in the bleaker narratives where the Nazis win and domestic abusers go unpunished, there is a sense that this was the only way it could have gone, even if we know alternatives exist. Is the Nick Spencer Run on Amazing Spider-Man… Good?

June 11, 2021 by Sean Dillon 5 Comments

No.

A picture containing text Description automatically generated

Though, in its defense, the main Amazing Spider-Man title hasn’t been consistently good since Peter Parker was possessed by the ghost of Doctor Octopus (though, even then, that run was hobbled by Dan Slott’s inclination towards mediocrity and continuity fetishism); and it hasn’t been consistently great since the ’90s. There are many reasons for this, from an inexplicable notion that Spider-Man is a character who has to function like a teenager (I blame John Byrne) to the far more understandable (if still depressing) notion that Peter Parker must be a straight white guy who suffers for our sins (I blame Sam Rami).

* Spoilers for the run to date follow *

Crossover by Donny Cates & Geoff Shaw Vol. 1 Review!

May 25, 2021 by Sean Dillon 3 Comments

So the last time I talked about Crossover for the site, I ended things with a cliffhanger about the fascinatingly horrifying final page. A page that invoked such a great amount of cosmic dread in me, I couldn’t help but laugh like a maniacal lunatic at the sheer scope of its wrongness. I laughed and laughed at every single element of it, because it was just… W O W. Now that the first volume of Crossover has reached its end, I think it’s time I shared with you the final page of that first page. The Old 52: The Multiversity Chat

May 15, 2021 by Sean Dillon Leave a Comment

Sean Dillon: Ok, so… The Multiversity. It’s, uh, it’s a lot. There are many places we could start with this one, so let’s begin with something basic: What was your first Grant Morrison comic?

Ritesh Babu: Amusingly? It’s tied up in this. All-Star Superman was the first, proper, full Morrison I read. It was a complete story and collection of a years-old book. It was, also, ‘out of continuity’ and an ‘Elseworlds.’ So I was interested in them as a writer and wanted more. And what do I hear about and find but this dashing new comics event called The Multiversity! It was the first Morrison I read as it came out. In that sense, I consider this thing to be my ‘first, proper Morrison.’ It’s not the hermetically sealed, self-contained epic that is All-Star. [Read more…] about The Old 52: The Multiversity Chat

Netflix’s Jupiter’s Legacy Review Roundtable!

May 10, 2021 by Sean Dillon 5 Comments

Ritesh Babu: So, Jupiter’s Legacy, the first of the upcoming wave of Millarworld media works. The big launch of an IP-farm that Netflix spent 50 million on and bought, only to have Millar helm it and run it for them on top of that. This is his self-proclaimed masterpiece. His apparent magnum opus. His sprawling mega-epic, which spans and touches everything he’s ever wanted to express. So, folks, what do we think of this damn thing?
