Crowdsourcing Comics with Iron Man & Audi

April 30, 2013 by Dave Leave a Comment

I won’t sit here and pretend I always get tweets from @Audi, but when I do I drink Dos Equis. Wait… wrong marketing campaign.

What I meant to say was when Audi tweets me a weirdly personal link with little to no description, I darn well click through.

Glad I did here, as it led me to their Iron Man 3 promotion, Steer the Story, a surprisingly interesting development in crowd-sourced digital comics. [Read more…] about Crowdsourcing Comics with Iron Man & Audi

Monday Morning Comic Rack: Why I’m Using Kobo for Digital Comic Reading

April 29, 2013 by Dave Leave a Comment

When someone talks about digital comics now, they are very likely talking about digital comics as read through one specific reader: Comixology.

While it’s through Comixology that you’ll find the latest and greatest from Image, Marvel, and DC, there are plenty of instances where the app just won’t have what you’re looking for.

Marvel’s Fantastic Freemium: Why Giving it Away Sets the Comic Publisher Apart

April 15, 2013 by Dave 1 Comment

Marvel Comics has been giving away a LOT of free stuff lately. And not just your standard “here’s an old issue of a second-tier story” digital giveaway.

Recent Marvel freebies have included every #1 issue in their publishing history, as well as the starting issues of their digital Infinite Comics line.

As a fan, this is clearly great. But is this a sustainable business model for Marvel, and is it good for the comic book industry as a whole? [Read more…] about Marvel’s Fantastic Freemium: Why Giving it Away Sets the Comic Publisher Apart

Saga #12 Controversy: Comixology, Comics Media, and Literally Everyone Gets it Wrong

April 11, 2013 by Dave Leave a Comment

If you regularly follow comic book news, by now you’ve heard: Saga #12, the consensus comic series of the year, was digitally banned by Apple for ‘gay sex’ images. At least, until it was actually digital comics distributor Comixology who banned the issue, assuming Apple wouldn’t like it. Until actually it was never banned at all, CARRY ON GAY SEX NOTHING TO SEE HERE!

The whole thing immediately looks like a black eye for comic book news media, but it does raise a few interesting questions, including: Just how mature do you need to be to read Saga? [Read more…] about Saga #12 Controversy: Comixology, Comics Media, and Literally Everyone Gets it Wrong
