Dr Who: The Twelfth Doctor #1 – Scottish, Cranky, and Pitch Perfect

October 19, 2014 by Dave Leave a Comment

I’ve been surprised with how much I’ve enjoyed Peter Capaldi’s 12th doctor. This happens with every new incarnation of the Doctor in my lifetime (“he’s wearing tennis shoes and a suit!” and “he looks like a baby with a chin!”), but Capaldi’s announcement seemed to receive extra passionate disapproval. After much speculation about finally changing the Doctor’s gender or race, with such names as Hermoine Granger and Stringer Bell thrown into the ring, at the end of the day the announcement was “Please welcome another old white guy!” Oh. Agents of SHIELD Episode 4 (S2): Can Marvel TV Survive Without Anything Super?

October 15, 2014 by Dave Leave a Comment

Another week of Agents of SHIELD, another review where all I want to do is talk about The Flash. Over on the CW (Comics Winners), The Flash is featuring a new meta human (character with super powers) every week. Agents of SHIELD, on the other hand, has been notoriously cagey with powers, slow-playing reveals of Blizzard and Graviton (still M.I.A.) until leading season two with the Absorbing Man. So here’s this week’s theme: Can comic book TV survive like that? [Read more…] about Agents of SHIELD Episode 4 (S2): Can Marvel TV Survive Without Anything Super?

DC Comics Reading Order

October 13, 2014 by Dave 34 Comments

Ever since I started Comic Book Herald the blog has been extensively Marvel Comics focused. This is largely because Marvel is my first love. I grew up on Spider-Man and X-Men animated cartoons, yet somehow NEVER saw Batman: The Animated Series until much later. Nonetheless, DC Comics have played an important role in developing my love of comic books, from Geoff John’s Green Lantern to Grant Morrison’s Batman. [Read more…] about DC Comics Reading Order

Agents of SHIELD Episode 3 Season Two Review! Aos Vs. The Flash Debut

October 8, 2014 by Dave 5 Comments

I had a moment about midway through Agents of SHIELD episode 3 where I wondered if perhaps I’m too hard on Agents of SHIELD, if perhaps my expectations are too high. I also watched CW’s The Flash last night, and found that first episode exhilarating, enjoyable, and most importantly, FUN. I was completely able to take the cheesy lumps – the “subtle” references to speed every fourth sentence, the romantic entanglements of a CW show – and just enjoy them as part of a fun-filled whole. Mid-way through Agents of SHIELD I asked out loud if the show is really so much less fun, or if I’m just significantly less forgiving. Why doesn’t Agents of SHIELD feel so easy to love? Agents of SHIELD Season 2 Ep 2 Review! Confident Second Season

October 1, 2014 by Dave 4 Comments

The success of Agents of SHIELD season two so far (and so far I would absolutely consider it a success) can be summed up in one word: confidence. I wrote about this after episode one, but this is an Agents of SHIELD that knows what it wants to be. We’re done wandering aimlessly in a luxury airliner looking for freaks of the week. Agents of SHIELD is the now defunct peace-keeping force tasked with protecting a world that hates and fears them (more on that in 5 things I want to see), and ending the threat of HYDRA. Episode 2 continues right where we left off in episode 1, with Director Coulson and crew leading the hunt for Crusher Creel (the Absorbing Man) and the obelisk in his possession.
