Chaos War is an anomaly within the scope of major Marvel Events in that it’s mostly an extension of Grep Pak and Fred Van Lente’s Incredible Hercules series.
That said, the cosmic scope of Chaos War rivals Infinity Gauntlet and it includes a reasonably manageable number of tie-in trades and issues.
Chaos War is pretty thickly mired in the continuity of Incredible Hercules, but the general focus of the event is the rise of the Chaos King and his desire to unmake the living universe. As so often happens with Marvel cosmic events, this leaves the standard Marvel heroes pretty useless, as Hercules and Thor are left to form a defending God Squad to save the universe.
This is far from my favorite Marvel event, but there are some important, lasting repercussions that come out of Chaos War. Trade reading order and an issue by issue checklist are included below for your reading pleasure.

I would also recommend reading Prince of Power mini-series first because it serves as prologue to the story
