America Chavez (Miss America) Reading Order!

November 10, 2021 by Charlotte Fierro Leave a Comment

It’s always exciting to see Marvel try to embrace new non-legacy characters (yes, there was a Miss America in the 40s, but the two characters have nothing in common outside of the name). It’s even more exciting when those characters bring new representation to the Marvel universe, as the House of Ideas is in desperate need of more queer and non-white characters. This all makes America Chavez, Marvel’s first LGBTQIA+ Latine character to ever get her own ongoing series, one of the most interesting new characters to have come out (no pun intended) of Marvel Comics in recent years.

From dimension-hopping teen hero to Avenger and Ultimate, Ms. America has quickly become a mainstay in the Marvel universe; soon both on the page and on the big screen, with Xochitl Gomez set to play the character in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The Watcher Reading Order!

October 18, 2021 by Charlotte Fierro Leave a Comment

At first glance, the idea of needing a reading order for a character whose sole purpose is to never actually do anything might seem strange. However, as you’ll soon find out if you open almost any of Uatu’s appearances throughout Marvel history, the Watcher can’t help himself but intervene all the freaking time. Whether it’s because he cares too much about humans, or because he wants to feel like the heroes he spends all of his time observing, Uatu’s actions have influenced the fate of the Marvel universe (and even multiverse) as he has broken his oath over and over again. The Marvel Universe of Al Ewing (Reading Order)!

September 13, 2021 by Charlotte Fierro 1 Comment

In the few years since he’s joined the Marvel universe, Al Ewing has become one of the biggest names in American comic books, especially superhero comics ; not least of all because of his critically acclaimed work on The Immortal Hulk. However, his Marvel Comics history actually started back in 2013, and has since then spanned across many different characters and stories, from Loki to the Inhumans and even several different Avengers teams.

Ewing’s work at Marvel is not only noteworthy for often aiming to shake up the status quo of the Marvel universe as well as taking on cosmic proportions ; but also for his dedication to representation in his stories, especially queer representation in books like Immortal Hulk and Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as having mostly non-white teams in his Mighty Avengers and Ultimates especially.

And although Immortal Hulk is approaching its end, Al Ewing’s time at Marvel seems to only be beginning, as he is currently heading the new era of Marvel’s Galactic stories, across titles like Guardians of the Galaxy, S.W.O.R.D., and Venom; and events like Empyre and The Last Annihilation. Jane Foster (Valkyrie) Reading Order!

September 2, 2021 by Charlotte Fierro Leave a Comment

Until the last decade, the tale of Jane Foster wasn’t a particularly noteworthy one. She was nothing more than the usual example of a 60s love interest, used as a secondary character to a male hero for a few years before being pushed aside and fading to the background of the Marvel universe.

But this all changed in 2014, when writer Jason Aaron pushed his run on Thor in a whole new direction by replacing the god of thunder with a new Thor, the Mighty Thor, the Goddess of Thunder : Jane Foster. Accompanied by Russel Dauterman’s gorgeous art, Aaron reinvented her as a superhero, protecting Asgard and the Nine Realms as Thor, while battling breast cancer as Jane, with the complication that using Mjolnir cancels the effects of chemotherapy on her body, thus putting her life on the line even more each time she picks up the hammer.

When the time came for Jane to stop being the goddess of thunder however, she didn’t stop being a hero, instead taking on the mantle of Valkyrie to defend the Realms and accompany the souls of dead heroes to Valhalla. And now that she is is about to come back to the MCU in a big way as the Mighty Thor in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder, it’s a great time to look back on the story of Jane Foster, both as the Mighty Thor and as Marvel’s new Valkyrie. Dracula (Marvel) Reading Order!

August 13, 2021 by Charlotte Fierro 1 Comment

In the 1970s, after having spent more than a decade as a juggernaut of superhero comics, Marvel expanded their line in a new direction, going back to their 50s Atlas Comics tradition of horror and supernatural stories. But instead of Kirby-esque creatures from outer space like “Xemnu the Living Hulk” or “Groot from Planet X,” Marvel found its new monsters in literary and cinematographic icons such as Frankenstein’s monster, the Werewolf, and — most notable among them — Dracula.

The Tomb of Dracula became the most successful of Marvel’s 70s horror comics, telling the story of the continued struggle between a group of vampire hunters and the titular villain. Count Dracula is presented as a villainous – although at time sympathetic – figure, sometimes fighting alongside the heroes, but always motivated by his hunger for blood and power.

For most of his initial series, Dracula stayed in his own part of the Marvel universe, very rarely crossing over with other titles, and mostly with similarly horrific or supernatural characters. But this started changing in the 2000s, when the Lord of the Vampires became a villain for the whole Marvel universe, encountering characters like Captain Britain, the X-Men, or even Deadpool. Most recently, since 2019, Dracula has become the leader of his own Vampire Nation, serving as an antagonist for the Avengers as well as Wolverine. [Read more…] about Dracula (Marvel) Reading Order!
