The best comics of 2025 keep getting stronger, as this month’s list is full of banger after banger, including three new graphic novels inside my top 15 of the year.

I spent a vacation completely unplugging from all things online and instead only reading the first 7 Perfect Editions of Naoki Urasawa’s 20th Century Boys. While this was the best my brain’s felt in ages, it also means my 2025 to-read pile is growing seriously threatening. We haven’t quite reached “I won’t even make eye contact with it” territory, but we’re close. And my god, the comics just keep coming. Will they never cease!

This is an interesting month for releases as it marks the first wave of DC Absolute trade editions in the market, even though the Absolute Universe #1 issue energy hit shops in October 2024. I suspect that won’t hamper these first wave releases much, as the Absolute U is both quite good and quite new reader friendly. Would have been nicer to have these ready to roll after all that Superman hype in July, but nobody asked me!

I should hope that if you’ve followed me in any measure of the years that 1) You’ve stopped doing that, following scared men is rude and 2) that you know how I feel about libraries. But I gotta stand up and say it again, scream it from my admittedly “maybe I could jump this?” rooftop: LIBRARIES ARE THE STINKIN’ BEST. I’d venture to guess that at least 50% of my new comics and graphic novel intake this year is via my local library, and their quite good curation and ordering programs. Combined with my kids’ increasingly bottomless reading appetite, and at any given time, my home is likely to be more parts library book than man.

Am I breaking ground here sharing that the place with free books is good at having free books? Maybe not! But somewhere, somebody needs a reminder to get that library card so they can read more comics. And let me tell you, you will not be disappointed!

Obviously, I occupy a highly coveted position, with hundreds – nay – thousands of up-and-come-Johnnys seeking to usurp my role as the world’s foremost comics ranker. Every month, these hungry wolves rank their favorite comics of the month, and come for my throne, and every month, I beat them off (I could edit that! I won’t!).

So, it is with a benevolence worthy of Doom, that I bestow upon all of you a tip – a secret to success if you will. If you are to rank all the best comics and graphic novels every month, and do so with studied wit, taste and grace, do not, under any circumstances, begin playing Elden Ring. I put off Elden Ring for fear of its difficulty, but now that I’ve begun, this game has taken over my life. Will I be able to maintain my comics ranking throne for the duration of 2025 while in the midst of such gaming? Stick with me dear reader, and let’s find out together!

The world’s on fire yet somehow comics persist. It’s really quite beautiful. I’ve kept up with as many new graphic novels and trades as possible, and have ranked my 2025 favorites in descending order below!

The list rules: I’m keeping the mid-year picks to my favorite 40 completed graphic novels and trades released in 2025. When we get to year end I”ll probably have to extend the list to 50! This means good runs that have only been released in single issues are not yet eligible until they are collected (Look for the full best of 2025 in December to see what changes!). As always, the list is also limited to works that have been written or translated into English, and somehow found their way into my hands. And yes, they’re ranked in descending order from #40 to #1 below!

My actual 2025 favorites are shared (at least) 10 at a time monthly, which of course means there are quite a few more than 50 books on the ol’ 2025 Power Rankings. You can find them all in my custom bookshop list!
