ETERNALS (2006) by Neil Gaiman and John Romita Jr Review!

December 12, 2020 by Karen Charm 1 Comment

In 2006, Marvel tapped Neil Gaiman (of Sandman and American Gods fame) to resuscitate their long-dormant Eternals line. Gaiman joined heavy-weight penciller John Romita Jr. to create an ambitious, quasi-magical mythology, not unlike American Gods, that tapped into the then-ongoing conversations about intelligent design. Their Eternals miniseries plays off of the property’s own obscurity, priming it to be the definitive introduction for readers of the mid-aughts and beyond. It is gorgeous, cinematic, and so stuffed with fresh ideas that it can lose track of its own plot. Now, with a major motion picture on the way and a new, similarly ambitious relaunch around the corner, let’s take a moment to look back at this now-evergreen, contemporary introduction to… the Eternals.

Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar #3 Review!

December 9, 2020 by Mark Turetsky & Stuart Wellington Leave a Comment

Check out all of Mark and Stuart’s Warhammer 40,000 reviews right here!

Mark Turetsky: Ahoy, Chapter Master! It’s been another month, and the skull throne isn’t going to skull itself!

Stuart Wellington: Good thing that I’ve got at least one skull then!

Side note: Games Workshop, the producers of Warhammer 40K are well known for putting skulls on EVERYTHING. They even sell a kit of JUST SKULLS to add to your already skull-encrusted models.

So, Mark, where did we leave our hero, the Lord Macragge, Chapter Master of the Ultramarines, Marneus Calgar?

* Spoilers for discussed comics may follow!*

Daredevil By Bendis & Maleev – The Fall of Matt Murdock

December 9, 2020 by Matt Draper Leave a Comment

“Anyway, it’s been a hell of a week. (Hell of a week …) Hell of a year! Hell of a year is what it’s been … Almost a year to the day when Matt Murdock took control of ‘The Kitchen.”

And so begins the second half of Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev’s Daredevil, a story that began with a good man’s most self-destructive impulses turning him into his own worst enemy and whose fallout will see him unable to outrun the consequences of his actions.

DAREDEVIL: The Elektra Saga – Exploring A Ninja-Noir Tragedy

December 2, 2020 by Matt Draper Leave a Comment

If Frank Miller’s time on Daredevil is defined by one storyline, it’s likely “The Elektra Saga,” a running plot thread that laced through his entire run as writer on the title, dipping in and out of Matt Murdock’s life and interlocking with other running storylines.

As we’ve previously discussed, Miller’s Daredevil run from 1981 through 1983 completely reshaped the character of Daredevil and is largely composed of two narratives – The rise of The Kingpin and the arrival of Elektra. Miller and collaborator Klaus Janson slowly interweave these two elements, expanding Daredevil mythology and smashing it against a darker, grittier urban crime element until they ignite in tragedy.
