Injustice: Year Zero Review!

August 5, 2020 by Zoe Tunnell 1 Comment

Injustice: Year Zero’s first three issues make for a confusing and muddled debut. Set a year before writer Tom Taylor’s original run on the wildly popular Injustice: Gods Among Us, the digital-first series introduces the Injustice universe incarnation of beloved World War 2 superhero team: the Justice Society of America.

These heroes give the series a split identity of reaching for the warm nostalgia of more heroic days gone by while also responding to the rise of real-world fascism in the years since Gods Among Us first debuted. The latter goal likely fueled by the use of fascist and totalitarian imagery and beliefs within Superman’s regime. Unfortunately, neither direction feels particularly well-realized and leads to an unsatisfying beginning for the title. [Read more…] about Injustice: Year Zero Review!

Excellent Ideas & Squandered Execution: AQUAMAN by Deconnick and Rocha Review!

July 30, 2020 by Zoe Tunnell Leave a Comment

2018 was a significant year for Aquaman, both as a character and as a figure in the cultural consciousness. After spending decades best known as a useless punchline, Arthur Curry’s status in pop culture was overhauled entirely into that of a muscular, sea-soaked sex symbol thanks to the outrageously successful Aquaman film, starring Jason Momoa. In contrast, Aquaman had never suffered the same harsh reputation as a joke in the world of comic books, thanks to well-regarded runs from creators such as Peter David and Dan Abnett.

On top of his blockbuster debut, Arthur found himself under one of his biggest comic book spotlights yet, leading a crossover event with DC’s flagship Justice League series, titled Drowned Earth. Wanting to capitalize on the hype surrounding the 77-year old mainstay’s movie debut, DC Comics announced a new, high profile creative team to take over Aquaman following the crossover: Kelly Sue DeConnick, the writer who modernized Captain Marvel and led to the Marvel superhero’s current massive popularity, with Robson Rocha, a historically overlooked but very talented star within DC’s artist roster.

With one successful revamp of a longstanding superhero into a mega star under her belt, DeConnick seemed like a natural fit to overhaul the King of Atlantis for modern readers. Unfortunately, Aquaman has yet to live up to those lofty expectations, having nearly all of its exciting ideas weighed down with questionable execution. BATMAN by Grant Morrison: In The Grip of The Black Glove

June 18, 2020 by Matt Draper Leave a Comment

There is a hole at the center of everything. A mystery that can never truly be solved, even by the world’s greatest detective. And within that hole lies a trap waiting to be sprung.

Grant Morrison’s seven-year run on Batman is the story of Bruce Wayne being confronted with threats older than time and greater than reality. It’s the story of one man’s struggle to defeat evil that may come at the cost of his sanity.

While this long-unraveling story of The Dark Knight being broken down physically and mentally may seem like deconstruction, Morrison’s Batman is the story of one man rising to defeat evil again and again until he becomes something unchained by time and space. Crackin’ Crisis: DC’s 1st Anti-Crisis Event — Death Metal #1 Review!

June 17, 2020 by Dave 1 Comment

Dark Nights: Death Metal is the sequel to 2017-2018’s Dark Nights Metal, one of my three favorite comic book events of all time, bringing back the creative superteam of Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion, and collaborators, amplifying everything that made the original a success to 11. Death Metal’s ambitions are impossibly grand, seeking to unify the history of DC’s Crisis events and the particularly discordant recent years into one epic saga.

Today I’ll answer:

  • How does Death Metal fit into the legacy of DC Crisis events?
  • What makes this an Anti-Crisis?
  • What are the Watchmen Connections to Death Metal?

I’ll tell anyone who will listen that DC’s Dark Nights: Metal is one of my favorite comic book events of all time, and creators Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo are back for round two in 2020 with Dark Nights: Death Metal.

On today’s Road to DC Death Metal I’ll investigate:

  • How did we get here and what comics should you understand prior to the event?
  • My theories, predictions, and hopes for Death Metal
  • And whether Death Metal can save DC Comics from its current malaise!
