The Compassionate Brutality of “Wonder Woman: Dead Earth”

February 10, 2021 by Matt Draper Leave a Comment

In the aftermath of a fiery apocalypse, humanity clings to life with little hope of a future. And into this world awakens Diana of Themyscira. But what can Diana save when so little of the world she loves remains? And what will become of Wonder Woman when she learns the truth of what happened centuries ago?

Daniel Warren Johnson’s 4-issue miniseries “Wonder Woman: Dead Earth” was published in 2020 under DC Comics’ Black Label imprint and follows Princess Diana, who has suddenly woken up in a post-apocalyptic earth. The causes of Earth’s destruction are vague, but centuries earlier the planet was scorched and now a small band of survivors fights to stay alive in a barren wasteland overrun by grotesque monsters known as the haedra. The fight to save what’s left of humankind will reveal what caused this apocalypse and challenge Wonder Woman’s values of love and compassion in a brutal, hopeless world. The Old 52: DC’s New 52 10 Years Later – The Launch & What We Can Learn

February 9, 2021 by Vishal Gullapalli 8 Comments

The more things change, the more they stay the same. It’s been nearly 10 years since the New 52. DC’s messed around with their continuity some more, between Rebirth and Metal and Doomsday Clock, but everything’s even more convoluted now than it’s ever been before. And ultimately, that’s okay.  In around a month, DC will be relaunching their line again with their new Infinite Frontier line, spinning out of a 2-month linewide initiative called Future State. But the real question we’re asking – okay, the real question I’m asking – is whether or not DC has actually learned from the lessons of the New 52. What makes this relaunch any more likely to succeed? [Read more…] about The Old 52: DC’s New 52 10 Years Later – The Launch & What We Can Learn

Batman: The White Knight – Mirrors of Mental Illness

February 8, 2021 by Monika Estrella Negra Leave a Comment

The White Knight (2017) takes a look into the psyche of Batman and the Clown Prince of Crime, the Joker. This is perhaps one of the most outwardly progressive runs that has happened in the Gotham universe, though it is heavily flawed. While we get to take a closer look into the “bromance” between Joker and Batman, we also gain an introspective look into the social stratosphere of Gotham outside of the criminal activity that takes place. This is a socially relevant storyline and is just as complex as our world can be. One of the primary themes it tackles is mental health, its propensity of being criminalized – and who gets the privilege of escaping its punishments.

It’s not a secret that Bruce Wayne has serious child trauma issues, but it has been a part of the discourse for a while now that his status as a privileged man in Gotham allows him to live out his revenge fantasies on so-called super villains. The White Knight shows us that the other side of the pasture is not as green as we’d like to see it. [Read more…] about Batman: The White Knight – Mirrors of Mental Illness

The Old 52: DC’s New 52 10 Years Later – The Launch & What Went Well

February 2, 2021 by Vishal Gullapalli 6 Comments

And at last, we reach the books that I actually want to talk about. The best part of a line-wide relaunch is always the successful books that come out of it, and these successful books usually indicate the strongest ideas behind the relaunch. But what’s interesting about the New 52 is how many of these really strong books exist almost to spite the reboot. Let’s dive in. The Old 52: DC’s New 52 10 Years Later – The Launch and What Went Okay

January 26, 2021 by Vishal Gullapalli 1 Comment

As with all major line-wide relaunches, the New 52 had plenty of books that filled out some gaps without really feeling innovative or must-read. Not everything can be a classic, and these kinds of stories serve as a baseline for the publisher. What’s fascinating about a lot of these books, though, is that they’re not just forgettable or unremarkable. No, a lot of these books took risks in their own way, even if they didn’t pay off as successfully as the creators or readers would have liked. Oftentimes these books are the ones most emblematic of a relaunch – which can’t be defined by its worst or its best offerings; it needs to be defined by the average of what it puts out.
