The Phalanx hold a strangely prominent place in my heart due the techno-organic alien invader’s involvement in the last season of X-Men the animated series. Since X-Men TAS did such an amazing job of adapting “Classic” X-Men stories like the Dark Phoenix Saga, I generally assumed the Phalanx Covenant was from an earlier 70’s or 80s story arc, at least until I put together the My Marvelous Year reading club and realized the comics and animated Phalanx were basically released in lockstep! New Warriors Reading Order
Marvel doesn’t ever really do the whole “kid sidekick” thing but there’s certainly never been a shortage of young super-powered people trying to make their way in a crazy comic book universe.
Although the landscape doesn’t really reflect it as much these days with the prominence of Young Avengers and the teenage Champions, for years there wasn’t much of a “Junior League Avengers” in the same way DC could seemingly always throw to the Teen Titans. Sure, there was New Mutants but they all wore matching uniforms, clearly signifying as the farm team for the mutant-centric X-franchises.
