The Nice House on the Lake Vol. 1 Review!

March 12, 2022 by Ben Johnson Leave a Comment

Every friend group seems to have that one person who stands at the center of it. They’re the one who connects everyone else together; the one who organizes the hangouts, the parties, the group texts and vacations; the one who drops everything for a chance to catch up and makes each person in their life feel like the most important person in their life. As someone who tends to be on the more introverted side, someone who sometimes has trouble keeping in touch with people I care about, I’ve always been a little envious of those who can effortlessly balance a number of close, meaningful friendships and maintain them for decades, no matter the age or the time apart or the distance that might separate them.

The Nice House on the Lake #1-6, by writer James Tynion IV with art by Álvaro Martínez Bueno and colors by Jordie Bellaire, pose a question: What if that friend, that person you’ve bared your soul to, or dated, or look up to, or all of the above; what if that person you trust is not who you thought they were, and might be something a whole lot more sinister than you could have ever imagined? The answers to that question – at least the ones that are doled out in this first volume, released in trade paperback form on March 1 – make for one of the most compelling comics I have ever read.

I’ll note here that I’m going to do my level best to avoid discussing specific plot points, but there are some minor spoilers ahead. [Read more…] about The Nice House on the Lake Vol. 1 Review!

Marvel Then! Young Avengers by Kieron Gillen & Jamie McKelvie

March 11, 2022 by Charlotte Fierro Leave a Comment

Despite the Young Avengers being a fan-favorite title and team (especially amongst younger comics fans), they have had surprisingly few series to their name in the now 17 years since their creation, only two official volumes and one Avengers crossover series, each between 9 to 15 issues long, plus a handful of tie-ins to different late 2000s events. This scarcity has made each Young Avengers series feel like a small event in itself, and it’s all the more true for their Marvel NOW! revamp, as written by Kieron Gillen and drawn by Jamie McKelvie (plus Kate Brown guesting on issue #6, and various guest artists in the last two issues), with Matt Wilson on colors and Clayton Cowles on letters.

Teenage heroes can be hard to deal with over time in the Marvel universe, as the sliding timescale often causes them to stay young forever; if Tony Stark, Carol Danvers and the other adult heroes have to stay in their thirties forever and never retire, that means the next generation of heroes can never fully grow up and take their place. Teams like the New Mutants, or more contemporary to the Young Avengers, the Runaways, have sometimes had trouble growing up alongside their audience. But in Young Avengers Vol.2, the kids that used to be 14 to 16 years old teenagers are now reaching young adulthood, with all the questions and anxieties that being at that age entails. Abomination Reading Order!

March 10, 2022 by Charlotte Fierro Leave a Comment

Picture this: it’s 1967. You are an artist named Gil Kane, and you are working at Marvel on the comic book Tales to Astonish. Stan Lee just asked you to create a new bigger, badder, meaner antagonist for the Hulk, and you’re racking your brain, trying to come up with the right design. When suddenly, genius hits: “What if the Hulk was a weird scaly fish/lizard guy?”

This is the story of the Abomination, one of the Jade Giant’s most recurring foes, always ready to cause trouble for Marvel’s Gamma heroes (as we will soon see on our screens with his return to the MCU in Disney+’s She Hulk), and whose most important characteristic is his ability to be an eternal pain in the Hulk’s green posterior. Understanding The Dark Knight Strikes Again: Frank Miller’s Self-Destructive Magnum Opus

March 9, 2022 by Matt Draper Leave a Comment

Gotham is saved, the future finds hope, and the Dark Knight has returned. But when the world is at its worst, it’s time for the Dark Knight to strike again.

In 2001, Frank Miller returned to DC Comics for a belated sequel to his highly influential Batman dystopia Dark Knight Returns. The result was the three-issue The Dark Knight Strikes Again, a story that sees the aged Bruce Wayne continue his underground fight against corruption in a future world gone increasingly insane. But this time, Batman isn’t alone. He’s joined by the returning Carrie Kelley, now Catgirl instead of Robin, and a growing band of old Justice Leaguers, escaping imprisonment and retirement to fight back against the forces of Lex Luthor. And there’s also a new shapeshifting Joker, a terrorist Brainiac, and a media gone insane, but we’ll get to that later. [Chris Bachalo Darkhold Omega cover]

Do you feel like you’ve waited for decades for the Scarlet Witch to finally get her due, exacting a price against her erstwhile manipulator Doctor Doom (hello, Wanda’s curse and The Children’s Crusade) and Chthon too (Nights of Wundagore)? Then this book, or rather just one(!) of its issues, delivers.
