It’s time for DC’s The Batman to hit theaters in 2022, which means the CBH staff is here to pick some favorite Batman comics and graphic novels to fully immerse yourself in Gotham City.

Much like our guide for Wolverine, these picks represent some personal favorites and more off-the-beaten-path recommendations than the average list. If you’re wondering where best of Batman mainstays like Dark Knight Returns and “Year One” are, well, you can probably find them on my picks for the best comics of all time!

The Guide to Comics on Substack

In August 2021, the landscape of comics distribution shifted slightly, as two of America’s most popular and acclaimed comic book writers, James Tynion IV (Batman, Death of Wolverine: The Logan Legacy #6) and Jonathan Hickman (X-Men, Transhuman), announced Substack financial grants that meant their upcoming projects would release via Substack’s email newsletter platform. Tynion’s announcement felt particularly seismic since the writer coupled the news with his planned departure from DC’s Batman, the biggest superhero comic in America.

Other creators accompanied the news, or followed later, including notable talents like Molly Knox Ostertag, Saladin Ahmed, Chip Zdarsky, Sophie Campbell, ND Stevenson, Kelly Thompson, Scott Snyder, Jeff Lemire and Donny Cates & Ryan Stegman. On January 31, 2022, a day declared “Comics Day on Substack,” the roster swelled to include Tom King & Elsa Charretier, Brian K Vaughan & Niko Henrichon, Khary Randolph & Joanne Starer, Rodney Barnes, Jen Bartel, oh, and GRANT MORRISON. The 10 Best Wolverine Comics!

As Marvel Comics kicks off the 10 issue weekly event X Lives / X Deaths of Wolverine, the CBH staff is looking back at some of our favorite Wolverine comics of all time! X Lives / X Deaths promises to explore Wolverine’s full history, so it’s a great time to dig through the long catalog of Wolverine comics in Marvel’s history, and enjoy some all-time greats and some off-the-beaten-path favorites.

It’s worth noting up front that these selections largely eschew the well-worn recommendations you can find on any ol’ site (what’s up Claremont/Miller Wolverine, Old Man Logan, and that time Wolverine swallowed a cigar whole like a dumb manly python because Moira asked him to put it out indoors). These are the deep cut, personal Wolverine stories and eras that most effectively resonate with us, and this complex, simultaneously easy and hard to love Canucklehead. What Comics Best Match The 3 Live-Action Cinematic Spider-Men?

Thanks to the box office success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the cinematic history of Spider-Man is a hot topic around the water cooler for about a billion reasons, and with almost two decades worth of Peter Parker on the big screen, there is a lot to discuss. In those twenty-odd years, Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland have each given a take on the live-action wall-crawler that captures fundamental aspects of the character we love, all while telling vastly different types of stories about who Spider-Man is and how he fits into the world around him.

Believe it or not, dear reader, there are even debates on this here Internet about which big-screen version of Spidey is the best! And it’s true that while all three performances are undeniably Peter and his alter ego, they’re not quite the same Peter. Best Comics of 2021!

While historically ‘best of’ lists are best suited at year’s end, the reality is that waiting until then actually leaves some doubt throughout the year itself what is considered great as it’s happening. With that in mind, throughout 2021, I’ll be regularly updating Comic Book Herald’s best comics of 2021 guide, so that the work can function as a check-in for your next series to read, and by year’s end, a summary of everything we recommend.
