Daredevil By Bendis & Maleev – The Fall of Matt Murdock

December 9, 2020 by Matt Draper Leave a Comment

“Anyway, it’s been a hell of a week. (Hell of a week …) Hell of a year! Hell of a year is what it’s been … Almost a year to the day when Matt Murdock took control of ‘The Kitchen.”

And so begins the second half of Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev’s Daredevil, a story that began with a good man’s most self-destructive impulses turning him into his own worst enemy and whose fallout will see him unable to outrun the consequences of his actions.

DAREDEVIL: The Elektra Saga – Exploring A Ninja-Noir Tragedy

December 2, 2020 by Matt Draper Leave a Comment

If Frank Miller’s time on Daredevil is defined by one storyline, it’s likely “The Elektra Saga,” a running plot thread that laced through his entire run as writer on the title, dipping in and out of Matt Murdock’s life and interlocking with other running storylines.

As we’ve previously discussed, Miller’s Daredevil run from 1981 through 1983 completely reshaped the character of Daredevil and is largely composed of two narratives – The rise of The Kingpin and the arrival of Elektra. Miller and collaborator Klaus Janson slowly interweave these two elements, expanding Daredevil mythology and smashing it against a darker, grittier urban crime element until they ignite in tragedy. SUPERMAN (1978) – Finding The Hero Inside Us

November 11, 2020 by Matt Draper Leave a Comment

Doomed planet. Desperate scientists. Last hope. Kindly couple. And a legend that has inspired generations.

Richard Donner’s Superman is the defining superhero film, sparking the mainstream big budget era of comic book films that would eventually be shepherded into continual success by the likes of Tim Burton’s Batman and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. But Donner’s film is more than just a pillar of a subgenre, it’s a masterpiece in its own right, interlinking the romantic charm of bygone Hollywood with the modern era of blockbuster spectacle. Promising to make its audiences believe that a man can fly but giving them a story that’s more layered, charming, and human than what its central concept would have you believe.

The story is simple yet iconic, reiterating the classic tale of Clark Kent’s rise to heroism and itself being reiterated upon by dozens of films since. [Read more…] about SUPERMAN (1978) – Finding The Hero Inside Us

SWAMP THING: American Gothic – The Dark Heart of a Nation Uncovered

October 21, 2020 by Matt Draper Leave a Comment

There’s a darkness spreading out from the heart of America. A darkness that finds its roots in the past, but whose evils are a reminder of our present suffering. It’s a darkness that Swamp Thing will discover for himself, even as he learns truths that will reshape his entire world.

Alan Moore’s run on Swamp Thing from 1984 through 1987 redefined the title as a modern existential classic that touched everything from the nature of identity to the legacy of comic books. From the internal reformation of “The Anatomy Lesson” to the cosmic love of “Rite of Spring,” the first half of Moore’s Swamp Thing run is intensely focused on the creature who once thought himself to be Alec Holland gaining a greater understanding of his true self and finding love with longtime friend Abigail Arcane. It’s a series of stories that slowly push into the mystical nature of reality and consciousness, and it’s that mysticism that violently collides with modern societal issues in a 14-issue arc known as “American Gothic.” [Read more…] about SWAMP THING: American Gothic – The Dark Heart of a Nation Uncovered

BATMAN & ROBIN By Grant Morrison: Reforging the Dynamic Duo

September 9, 2020 by Matt Draper Leave a Comment

The evil in our world is greater than what the human mind can grasp. Beyond time and space lie threats and fears that break the bonds of reality. Only one man can hope to overcome these demons, but what can we do when our hero has been lost to time itself?

Grant Morrison’s Batman is rooted in the idea of Bruce Wayne transcending his limitations as a human hero and overcoming challenges that cannot be defined by logic or reason. But when Wayne is disintegrated by Darkseid’s Omega Beams during “Final Crisis” and placed back at the dawn of man, it’s up to his friends and family to pick up the pieces and live up to his legendary legacy.  [Read more…] about BATMAN & ROBIN By Grant Morrison: Reforging the Dynamic Duo
