Astro City is one of the best non-Big 2 superhero universes in comics. Writer Kurt Busiek has written some excellent stories for some of comics most well known figures, such as the Avengers and Justice League. Nonetheless, it’s been Busiek’s ability to find the realism and humanity at the heart of superhero comics, particularly in his work with Alex Ross in Marvels, that sets the stage for Astro City.

The Best Vertigo Comics: Where to Start With Vertigo?
If we’re talking about who has the title for best comic book publisher in the 2010’s, my easy quick answer goes to Image Comics. Image has delivered comic books at such a consistently high quality, from such talented creators, that it has earned its reputation for highest batting average in the game.
What newer comic book fans might not realize, is that Vertigo Comics was held in similarly high esteem for most of the 1990’s (the imprint officially launched in 1993) and into the 2000’s. Hellboy Reading Order: Where to Start With Hellboy Comics & BPRD
Hellboy’s great. I never expected to think that, but if you haven’t given Hellboy comics a shot, you’re missing out on one of the absolute best comic book universes out there.
I first heard of Hellboy through the 2000’s feature film with mightily low expectations. Yet behind the silly name, there was an excellent character, sharp humor, and clever action.

By all rights, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles could have remained a comic book curiosity, forgotten to all but the most dedicated comic book readers as an 80’s superhero parody.
