The first issue in the March to Axis comes in the form of the latest issue of Magneto. Magneto has been one of my favorite new Marvel comics of the year and has given us one of the best anti-hero stories that I’ve found in the comics medium. It’s also one of my favorite iterations of the Magneto character out of everything that I’ve read. I’ve been trying to tell everyone I know to check this one out. As I said earlier this is a prelude of sorts for Marvel’s fall event, Axis, combing one of my favorite comics with one of my most anticipated comics of the year. I enjoyed this issue and am excited to see how the rest of this arc will play out.
The writer of this issue was Cullen Bunn who’s become a rather well known creator over the past couple years. The artist was Gabriel Hernandez Walta.
Magneto #9: The Plot
This issue is about Magneto continuing on his quest to take on all of the mutant injustices in the world. Here we see him go after Red Skull who has continued to gain power and is currently revitalizing Genosha. Cullen Bunn has gone back to Magneto’s past in Germany multiple times throughout this series, but none have drawn from it as heavily as this one. We see him go back to a younger Magneto in Aushiwitz as a comparison to the concentration camp like conditions in Genosha. He then has an altercation with the Red Skull and his S-Men which sets up the next issue.
Magneto #9: Words and Art
Cullen Bunn was the writer for this issue and continues to do a great job. I said in the intro that this is one of the best anti-hero comic stories out there and this issue continues on in that vein. He has done a good job incorporating in the backstory and like that it doesn’t feel too forced.
The art in this issue was done by Gabriel Hernandez Walta. He does a nice job holding the mood of this book through the artwork. The flash backs in this issue are also well done and I enjoy how he is able to separate the two.
This was a great issue of a great series. It was also a good first showing for the upcoming Axis event and while it didn’t reveal too much about that it did begin making me even more hyped. It also helped that this issue had a slightly different structure in how it played out.
