Dawn of X: A New War For Survival Begins

March 31, 2021 by Doug Smith Leave a Comment

“What we’ve really needed was a giant leap forward. Well, this is it.”

It’s a brave new world for Mutantkind. After decades of suffering and hardship, the species has found a haven in the new nation of Krakoa. But as enemies both new and old emerge to threaten them, how will mutant kind’s heroes adapt to face them? And how will these changes shape the future of Krakoa and its people?

In 2019, acclaimed writer Jonathan Hickman took leadership of the X-Men line, breaking away from what came before and laying the groundwork for his own grand designs on the title. Compressing and re-contextualizing the title’s history through his miniseries House of X and Powers of X, Hickman reforged the “Mutant Metaphor” at the heart of the X-Men’ stories into a call to action: after suffering years of bigotry and infighting, the mutant species banded together into a single state, and finally declared themselves a sovereign power in the Marvel Universe. House and Powers didn’t just return the X-Men to form, it reintroduced them as a dominant political, cultural, and economic force. But this was just the beginning. Excalibur #19 Review!

March 25, 2021 by David Bowen Leave a Comment

In recent issues of Excalibur, it was revealed that Betsy Braddock’s spirit has been “ping-ponging” about the Multiverse since her body and the Starlight Sword were literally shattered in X of Swords. But now her elusive psyche has been caught in a glass lantern by one of Betsy’s alternate Captain Britain selves–to be brought back home to her rightful place and body. But that earthly vessel hatched in Mr. Sinister’s labs is not as empty as King Jamie Braddock was led to believe.

Note: The following contains spoilers for Excalibur #19 by Tini Howard, Marcus To, Erick Arciniega & VC’s Ariana Maher, on sale now

How to (Re)Read the Hickman Era of X-Men: Powers of X #3 Pt. 2; and the Conundrums of Moira

At first, it looks like the four diversionary X-Men attacking the Church of Ascendancy are winning. But they’re really just pressing their advantage of surprise while they can, knowing this is a last desperate act. Even Cardinal—“pushed to the brink”—knows this, having eaten “a terminal apocalypse seed” in order to fight till the end.

X-Men Inferno Omnibus Review!

March 22, 2021 by Kenneth Laster Leave a Comment

Oh Inferno, you big beast of a crossover.

Inferno is the culmination of a plethora of story seeds in the X-Men line of comics over the course of just…so many issues. The event runs through New Mutants, X-Terminators, Uncanny X-Men, and X-Factor. Not to mention, titles like Daredevil, Fantastic Four, Cloak and Dagger, and various Spider-Manses all get in on the tie-in game! And this Omnibus collects it all. It’s honestly a bit overwhelming, or at least it was for me when I first approached reading it in my 80s X-Read through sometime last year. However returning for this coverage, it’s much more simple to parse when you realize there are really two stories under one event. The first story is about Illyana Rasputin being tricked into opening the gate to limbo and reckoning with her role as the Darkchilde, and the second is the tragedy of Madelyne Pryor and her turn as the Goblin Queen.

This is a big event for two big stories. It can’t be overstated just how many things were leading directly towards this event and how many elements can be tied right back to it.  But honestly, enough prologue. Like I said there’s a lot here.

How to (Re)Read the Hickman Era of X-Men: Powers of X #2 Pt. 2, Powers of X #3

I. POX2: Year 100

So, who else would bi-centenarian Logan call “old man” (POX 1) but the millennia-old Apocalypse? Here, in a world where Xavier was killed as a young man, Xavier’s murderer is also “boss”—made crystal clear, shockingly, by Apocalypse’s reference to Logan as War, and hence one of his Horsemen. This means that the Apocalypse of Moira’s ninth life had infected Logan with a Death Seed, just as the Life-Ten Apocalypse did to Angel, thereby transforming him into Death. It was Rick Remender’s Uncanny X-Force that revealed this specific wrinkle of the Horsemen mythos (in “The Dark Angel Saga,” #10-18, 2011).
