Four Real-life Star Athletes Who Became Superheroes

December 23, 2013 by Anthony Wild Leave a Comment

Who said athletes can’t be superheroes?

For many, sports and comic books didn’t exist on the same plane; they were on different dimensions to be exact. But for some odd reason, real-life super athletes did appear in our comic books. From famous wrestlers like Robert “Sgt. Slaughter” Remus to baseball shortstop Calvin Edward “Cal” Ripken Jr., they showed us that athletes can also uphold the principles of justice and freedom for all mankind.

Now, here are some of the athletes that graced the pages of our beloved comic books. [Read more…] about Four Real-life Star Athletes Who Became Superheroes

Why I Created Comic Book Herald (Or: The CBH Story (Or: I Just Like the Comics Library Lady, I Swear))

August 21, 2013 by Dave 7 Comments

I’m sitting in a library reading comic books. I have only recently graduated college, and I have found myself a job in marketing, and I don’t hate the job yet, but that will come just be patient.

Not you. You don’t need to be patient. I mean, it’s not terrible advice, depending on the context I suppose. For example, if you’re reading this instead of catching the last train out to your office, or instead of picking up your child from daycare, maybe be less patient? A little haste could improve things? I don’t want to be bossy though. The choice is yours. But you don’t need to be patient in regards to my disillusionment with my first job. That isn’t even a part of this story.

This story? Yes. This is the story of why I started Comic Book Herald, the blog you are reading now. It starts in the library, after work, as a grown adult. With comics. [Read more…] about Why I Created Comic Book Herald (Or: The CBH Story (Or: I Just Like the Comics Library Lady, I Swear))

DC’s Doing Digital Right! Why $0.99 Weekly Comics Are A Digital DC Win

July 15, 2013 by Dave Leave a Comment

It’s pretty easy to poke fun at DC Comics these days. The Big 2 comics publisher has really made some pretty public messes in 2013, and my personal DC pull-list has never been sparser (Batman, Wonder Woman & Animal Man, with Wonder Woman solidly on the chopping block).

Nontheless, the more I think about it, the better I feel about DC’s “Digital First” comic book strategy. I don’t usually attribute digital savvy to DC, but their experiments with a digital schedule might mean more for comics than anyone is letting on. [Read more…] about DC’s Doing Digital Right! Monday Morning Comic Rack: The Digital Comics Revolution Is Winning

July 7, 2013 by Dave 3 Comments

“I just like having it in my hands.”

If I’m saying this it means one of two things: 1) I’m defending myself after my wife complains about me having my hands down my pants in broad daylight or 2) I’m explaining why I prefer print books to digital.

I’ll never stop shoving my hands down my pants (I’m my own man! What’s that? Dirty dishes? I’m on it, honey!), but digital comic book reading may have won me over this past week. Here’s why.

So You Want The Complete History of Marvel Comics

July 3, 2013 by Dave 1 Comment

As my long-time true believers know, the original purpose of Comic Book Herald was (and remains) to catalog a coherent reading order for newcomers, relapsed old-timers (I mean… wise-timers), and just about anyone looking for a way in.

I make an ongoing effort to provide such a solution in my Complete Marvel Reading Order Guide, and to a degree, in my Best Comics on Marvel Unlimited.

That said, this is pretty clearly a work in progress, and even at full strength (see also: me getting fired and devoting myself fully to the not-for-profit sector here) it’ll be limited in scope.

And let’s face it: if you’re like me you want to read it all! [Read more…] about So You Want The Complete History of Marvel Comics
