DC’s 2021 Review Part 1: The Overview

January 31, 2022 by Nathan Payson 2 Comments

1.0.0 The Overview

2021 was a fresh start for DC Comics. With a new soft reboot, DC made choices that led to CNN interviews and stories of fans returning to comics after decades away. This year has been full of great moments and the ire of Fox News, but what about DC as a whole? [Read more…] about DC’s 2021 Review Part 1: The Overview

With Hickman having once again upped the cosmic ante for Krakoa in 2020’s X-Men #8-11, hopefully readers won’t have to wait for his eventual return to the X line for the resolution to these alien mysteries—more to the point, let’s see these story elements get some development in 2022. The world’s looking at you, Mr. Ewing!! Aliens, aliens, so many aliens, oh my!!!

Batman Swallowing His Own Cape: The Modern Caped Crusader’s Narrative Autocannibalism

January 29, 2022 by David Mann 4 Comments

“Rest in peace, Batman!”

The story of Batman ended about ten years ago with Christopher Nolan and Grant Morrison.

That’s the sort of thesis statement you either spend an entire thinkpiece dancing around to set up or you frontload, looking like a maniac completely divorced from cultural and commercial reality and having to explain yourself to whoever’s left reading at the end of the article. But I stand by that statement: What we’ve been watching and reading for the past decade has been the (extremely lucrative) post-flatline flailings of a corpse whose brain hasn’t stopped firing neurons yet. Victory did, in fact, defeat him. [Read more…] about Batman Swallowing His Own Cape: The Modern Caped Crusader’s Narrative Autocannibalism

Marvel Then: The Brilliance of Hawkeye

January 28, 2022 by Dave Leave a Comment

In October 2012, Marvel rebranded their entire line of comics under the “Marvel Now” banner, an era that would effectively last for three years until 2015’s Secret Wars. It’s a fan favorite era of comics, under the editorial reign of Axel Alonso, with titles like Hawkeye, Superior Spider-Man, Thor: God of Thunder, and Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers among many others.

2022 marks the 10 year anniversary of Marvel Now, so at Comic Book Herald, we’ll be looking back at the best, most interesting, or just downright most confounding Marvel Now titles. This is “Marvel Then.” [Read more…] about Marvel Then: The Brilliance of Hawkeye

SUPERMAN’S PAL, JIMMY OLSEN | How Jack Kirby Re-Invented the DC Universe

January 26, 2022 by Doug Smith Leave a Comment

In the pantheon of comic book greats, there are few names as legendary and monolithic as Jack “The King” Kirby. Breaking into the industry in the ‘30’s, Kirby would work alongside creators like Joe Simon, Steve Ditko, Stan Lee, and more, revolutionizing the superhero genre and ushering in the “Marvel Age” of comics. While his work at Marvel saw the creation of countless iconic characters, and garnered record sales and critical acclaim, Kirby’s lack of creative control and authorship credits soured his relationship with the company. Kirby would ultimately leave for DC Comics in 1970, with the publisher heralding his arrival in ads across their line. It’s here that Kirby would finally debut a saga he’d been forming for years, with its first steps arriving in an unlikely, but fitting place…Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen. No, seriously.
