Underrated Gems: The Mighty by Peter J. Tomasi and Keith Champagne

April 15, 2020 by Mikayla Laird 1 Comment

I make no secret that I am a huge fan of Peter J. Tomasi’s work. Especially when partnered with Patrick Gleason, but his writing is among the best currently working. I first found his work during DC’s New 52 initiative when he, along with Gleason, worked on the Batman and Robin series, one of the absolute best things to come out of the New 52. Both he and Gleason moved on to an amazing Superman run during the Rebirth era, and currently Tomasi is writing an equally great run on Detective Comics.

To get the best understanding of a writer, particularly one working for the big two, it’s perhaps best to look at their independent work. When working for Marvel or DC, creators have to keep to set rules and stay true to the character they are writing. With independent creations, however, writers and artists are free to exercise greater control over their ideas. The two independent creations that spring to mind when looking at Tomasi are the horror title House of Penance, and the superhero book The Mighty. Given Tomasi is now very much associated with Superman and Batman, looking at his indie superhero, Alpha One (co-written by Keith Champagne), is a deeply interesting experience. Underrated Gems: Zeb Wells’ Fall and Rise of the New Mutants

April 8, 2020 by Lincoln Crisler Leave a Comment

NOTE: The end of this piece WILL spoil HELLIONS #1, so if that matters to you, please bookmark this and enjoy later!

My selection for largely unheralded (pun intended) comic story of the recent decade is a timely and strategic choice. Back in the early 1980s, when the X-Men were busy fighting the Brood in space and Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel of MCU fame had heavy history with our merry mutants back in the day) was busy becoming Binary, an eventual member of the Starjammers, Professor Charles Xavier thought they were dead. Because of this, he founded a class of…well…New Mutants. This would be long-time writer Chris Claremont’s second ongoing series (Ed. Note: Art by Bob Mcleod!). He handed the keys over to Louise Simonson roughly halfway through the book’s 100-issue run. Near the end, artist Rob Liefeld took over writing the book, introducing characters like Cable, Domino and Deadpool that are X-Men mainstays (and movie stars!) to this day. Vagrant Queen Vol. 1 Review!

March 27, 2020 by Chelsea LaLicata Leave a Comment

I first became aware of writer Magdalene Visaggio’s writing via her book Kim & Kim, a fun story about a pair of down on their luck bounty hunters in space. Shortly after finishing the first volume I made myself a list of some of her books that interested me and Vagrant Queen was definitely on that list. Fast forward to now and we’re on the eve of Vagrant Queen making the jump from Vault Comics to the small screen in a SyFy channel TV show on March 27th, so what better time to take a look at the first volume of the comic and get a look at its inspiration?
