Deadman Omnibus Review!

December 8, 2020 by Sara Century 2 Comments

For modern fans of Deadman, the character will likely be best known as a melancholy spirit with a penchant for teaming up with Batman to assist in solving mysteries that the Dark Knight can’t handle alone. The Deadman Omnibus collects many of his early appearances, including his debut in Strange Adventures, and various team-ups with characters like Aquaman, the Challengers of the Unknown, Swamp Thing, and the Phantom Stranger. A surprisingly ubiquitous character throughout much of the late Silver age running into the Bronze age of comics, these early adventures give us a slightly different character than the handful of guest appearances he’s had in the modern age would imply.

Many of the greatest creators of the time worked on these Deadman stories, including Len Wein, Neal Adams, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, Keith Giffen, and many more, via this somewhat scattered handful of appearances. Deadman’s popularity for the time is unquestionable considering how often he showed up, but it still took all the way until the mid-eighties for him to land his own mini-series, and his appearances have become increasingly sparse over time. This omnibus will be good for fans of the character, but it will also collect a smattering of tales that otherwise could easily fall under the radar even for longtime comic readers. Creannotators #28: “Comic Book Story of Basketball” Interview With Writer Fred Van Lente!

December 8, 2020 by Dave Leave a Comment

This week on Creannotators, I talked with comics writer Fred Van Lente about The Comic Book Story of Basketball, a history of the game and the global, societal, and political forces that have shaped it. We talk basketball, shaping non-fiction comics, and Fred’s various superhero comics like Taskmaster and MODOK’s 11.

On Comic Book Herald’s ‘Creannotators’ I’ll be interviewing some of my favorite creators in comics about specific runs, graphic novels or series, looking for their insights on the inspirations behind the work and ideas or hidden material readers may have missed. Creannotators is an audio annotative guide to enjoying the intricacies and thinking in the art. Thanks for listening, and enjoy the comics!

Wonder Woman: Dead Earth Review!

December 5, 2020 by Kenneth Laster Leave a Comment

Wonder Woman: Dead Earth is a DC Black Label book by writer/artist Daniel Warren Johnson, Mike Spicer, and Rus Wooton, and it’s a weird comic book. The premise is very straight forward: Princess Diana of Themyscira wakes up in a post-apocalyptic wasteland and has to uncover the mystery of what went wrong and protect the remains of humanity. On the surface, the hook isn’t really all that different from Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Last Knight on Earth, but what really set it apart was Daniel Warren Johnson spearheading this book.

Johnson’s Shonen influence and work on Murder Falcon and Extremity really make him an exciting artist; his work conveys an over the top momentum and action that is a really fresh presence on a big two book. And objectively, Wonder Woman: Dead Earth is a visually stunning book and plays so perfectly into Johnson’s strengths as an artist. The story and plot are where it gets a bit dicier. At its core Wonder Woman: Dead Earth, is a story around the notion of second chances told really effectively, but its problems come when the story is put within the context of DC Comics’ fascination with overly grim settings, and the broader mythology of Wonder Woman & her meta-textual themes and context in the real world.
