FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN: The Human Heart of the Superhero

July 21, 2021 by Doug Smith Leave a Comment

For more than five decades, Spider-Man has remained one of the most popular and enduring comic book heroes. Created by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee, Peter Parker was the ultimate power fantasy to millions of readers young and old: an ordinary, shy kid who was suddenly blessed with spectacular powers. But since swinging into our lives in 1962, Spider-Man’s stories have evolved, as Peter met fellow heroes, lost friends and family, fought a bunch of his clones, struggled with his own mortality, and even lived through the heat death of the Marvel Universe. Once an incredibly down-to-earth look at superheroes, Spider-Man began to outgrow his everyman roots, with each larger-than-life threat increasing the fantastical elements of Peter’s life. To many, this trend reached its peak during Dan Slott’s 10-year run on the title, with Spider-Man founding his own billion-dollar company, gaining an arsenal of high-tech equipment, leaping into a multiversal epic alongside other spider-people, and, yes, fighting even more clones somehow (Don’t know why people keep coming back to that.) While Slott’s run still had plenty of great moments, it became clear to readers that the creators involved with Spider-Man weren’t as interested in the man behind the mask. That is, until Tom Taylor, along with artist Juann Cabal began their own run in 2019, fittingly titled Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Trading the high-tech, high-concept elements of Slott’s run for a more intimate adventure, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is a celebration of the human heart of the character, and how even the smallest of actions can make a world of change.

IRON MAN by Matt Fraction & Salvador Larroca: Resilience and Reinvention

May 26, 2021 by Doug Smith Leave a Comment

To many, Superheroes are a monolithic force for good: infallible, incorruptible, and invincible. But what happens when these heroes fail? And what does it take for them to recover, and rebuild? In 2008, writer Matt Fraction and artist Salvador Larroca began a 4-year tenure on The Invincible Iron Man, with the aim of restoring Tony Stark to his former glory as a shining vision of tomorrow. But to shape this new chapter for the character, Fraction had to confront Iron Man’s troubled past, and tear down his complicated legacy to forge something better in its place.

Unfortunately, Fraction’s run is often overshadowed by the characterization shown in Marvel Studios’ Iron Man and the subsequent entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But in spite of this, Fraction’s run has endured over the years on the strength of its deep, critical look at the character of Tony Stark, his numerous flaws, and his desire to move beyond them in the pursuit of a brighter future. Digging deep into Stark’s strengths, weaknesses, and insatiable curiosity, Matt Fraction’s run brings an entirely new outlook to the character, and superheroes at large: In the end, the best heroes aren’t invincible; they’re resilient.

Dawn of X: A New War For Survival Begins

March 31, 2021 by Doug Smith Leave a Comment

“What we’ve really needed was a giant leap forward. Well, this is it.”

It’s a brave new world for Mutantkind. After decades of suffering and hardship, the species has found a haven in the new nation of Krakoa. But as enemies both new and old emerge to threaten them, how will mutant kind’s heroes adapt to face them? And how will these changes shape the future of Krakoa and its people?

In 2019, acclaimed writer Jonathan Hickman took leadership of the X-Men line, breaking away from what came before and laying the groundwork for his own grand designs on the title. Compressing and re-contextualizing the title’s history through his miniseries House of X and Powers of X, Hickman reforged the “Mutant Metaphor” at the heart of the X-Men’ stories into a call to action: after suffering years of bigotry and infighting, the mutant species banded together into a single state, and finally declared themselves a sovereign power in the Marvel Universe. House and Powers didn’t just return the X-Men to form, it reintroduced them as a dominant political, cultural, and economic force. But this was just the beginning.
