The Death of Doctor Strange Reading Order

Throughout the 2000’s, Marvel Comics increasingly overplayed “Death Of” storylines, to the point that it’s difficult to find a prominent character who hasn’t died and returned at some point. During the Marvel Fresh Start era of comics (beginning in 2018), a variety of creators including Jonathan Hickman, Al Ewing, and Kieron Gillen all made a point of telling stories where the “Death of Death” is a central tenant, and the storytelling crutch of a character’s death as the point is largely done away with.

This is the background as we enter Death of Doctor Strange, a five issue mini event from Marvel comics throughout the final months of 2021. Creators Jed MacKay, Lee Garbett, Antonio Sabela, and Cory Petit are tasked with “killing” the Sorcerer Supreme, even as readers know the larger point is the story about what that “death” means, and the inevitable, likely return of said character in the near future (if Stephen Strange is to really die at all!). Plus, with Doctor Strange: The Multiverse of Madness set to debut in March 2022, the timing of a “death of” event sure feels suspicious!

The good news is Jed MacKay has proven one of the most reliable creators at Marvel, with an expectation shattering run on Black Cat, and the best handle on Marvel continuity and lore this side of Al Ewing.

Below you’ll find a guide to the comics and tie-ins in the Death of Doctor Strange event, updated for a chronological reading experience as issues are released. Enjoy the comics!

Seems massively short sighted to kill Strange just as his movies coming out.
