X-Force: Zero Tolerance Collects X-Force’s Road Trip Years

April 19, 2021 by Sara Century Leave a Comment

X-Force #70, written by John Francis Moore, art by Adam Pollina, Mark Morales, and Marie Javins, lettering by Richard Starkings

Often referred to as “the road trip era” of X-Force, X-Force: Zero Tolerance recollects the team’s relatively minor role in the Zero Tolerance conflict. Perhaps more importantly, it also rounds up the period during which its members quit the team and rode off on a doomed road trip where they made questionable romantic decisions, hitchhiked with the literal Scooby Gang, and got attacked by Selene at Burning Man. All very regular things that many of us do in our twenties when we’re trying to figure stuff out.

For better or worse, X-Force was one of the X-Books that defined the ’90s, and not just within Marvel. Characters like Cable were at the forefront of mainstream comics, but as the decade wore on, interest (and sales) waned. Writer John Francis Moore spent over thirty issues working on X-Force, and characters that generally didn’t get a lot of attention underwent a great deal of growth during his run. The changes they experienced were many, not the least of which was saying goodbye to Cable and figuring out how to be heroes on their own terms. Market fatigue was certainly a major factor for late ’90s X-Books, but though sales nearly halved during this run, it holds up surprisingly well today.

How to (Re)Read the Hickman Era of X-Men: House of X #3, Pt. 2, House of X #4

April 14, 2021 by David Bowen Leave a Comment

Note: I had initially assumed this would be a relatively tight piece, reflecting the pace of blockbuster action. Hah! There’s a lot going on in HOX 4. But for you, dear reader, I’ve uncovered inchoate revelations and tantalizing doubts that will surely sustain your anxieties well into the Dawn of X and beyond. Don’t forget to stay hydrated!

Krakoa Stops The Juggernaut | Juggernaut (2020) Full Story Review! | Krakin’ Krakoa #170

April 11, 2021 by Dave Leave a Comment

Apart from various special projects like X-Men Legends, or the Giant-Size X-Men Artist Special, the five issue Juggernaut miniseries by Fabian Nicieza and Ron Garney is the lone X-Office comic series that doesn’t *totally* fit into the Hickman era of X-Men, in the Dawn of X and now the Reign of X. It’s a series outside the core Krakoan X-Men era. Nonetheless, the focus on the non-mutant Cain Marko, Juggernaut does address the longtime X-Men antagonist, and sometime member’s status in the Krakoa era, including some interesting observations about the mutant nation. X-Men Epic Collection: The Sentinels Live Review!

April 2, 2021 by Fletcher Bumphrey 1 Comment

On my thirteenth birthday, I was given my first collection of X-Men comics. The characters were already legend. I’d spent the last few years being told stories, bits and pieces cobbled together from comics, and cartoons, and movies. When I started to read that collection, it did not disappoint. I fell in love with each character, the variety of personalities and backstories, all coming together to make a family. Each character showed a different philosophy, a different worldview, a different moral code, and they bounced off each other, creating a world that reflected the real one, creating a team that had depth and nuance.

Was it, at times, soap opera? Absolutely. But it was soap opera that worked, because each character had a beating heart. These X-Men are not those X-Men. [Read more…] about X-Men Epic Collection: The Sentinels Live Review!

How to (Re)Read the Hickman Era of X-Men: House of X #3, “Once More Unto the Breach” – Pt.1

March 31, 2021 by David Bowen Leave a Comment

At last! A two-issue run of Year 10 action! (Well, HOX 3 is actually mostly just suspense.)

And the Pepe Larraz cover of HOX 3, a blockbuster sci-fi action movie poster, kicks it off. We’ve got five senior X-Men—the revived trio of Cyke, Logan, and Jean; Kurt wielding a very large sword, much larger than his usual rapier or cutlass; and Warren as Archangel—and “Gen Xers” Monet and Paige Guthrie, or Husk. Their target is clear: The Mother Mold in orbit around the Sun.
