How to (Re)Read the Hickman Era of X-Men: The Hellfire Club (House of X #4-5)

V. Two Big Bad Mutants of Hellfire (cont. from last week’s list of newly Krakoan villains!)

(We’ll get to the undead human supremacists pictured above in section VI.)

Last time we did a rundown of all the mutant villains freely stepping onto Krakoan soil in House of X #5. Except for Selene and Sebastian Shaw—so now we can segue (at last!) into a look at the roster of human/non-mutant baddies listed in HOX 4. Why? The Hellfire Club was once an exclusive domain of power-politics contention between elite humans and mutants; it’s seen its share of amoral mutants and humans whose cynical, self-aggrandizing politicking has often resulted in great harm to mutantkind. And even today, the question of the Club’s legacy could reignite.

The Hickman X-Men (Re)Read: House of X #5, Pt.3 – The Villains

V. Villains’ Amnesty; Magneto’s Epigraph (pgs 24-29)

Including Apocalypse and Sinister, 22 villainous or adversarial mutants step through the gates. Below, are 18* brief descriptions of those we haven’t yet covered in this series. Speculation on expectations for each following HOX/POX won’t include spoilers. In sum, what we’ll find is all the varieties of inter-mutant strife the X-Men have dealt with over the years. And we’ll likely never see this particular collection of mutants together on the same page again! Pages 25 and 27 are unique snapshot moments in time.

Nightcrawler’s Religious History & Christianity in X-Men Comics | Krakin’ Krakoa #181

May 19, 2021 by Dave Leave a Comment

From the unforgettable Dave Cockrum design to the swashbuckling heart of the X-Men in the pages of Chris Claremont and company’s comics, Nightcrawler has long been my favorite mutant. I remain elated by the opening sequence of Nightcrawler in X2: X-Men United, and forever lament the character’s general absence in the 90s animated series. As the character develops in comics, Kurt Wagner’s Christianity becomes a more integral part of his story, not quite as integral as say Daredevil’s Catholicism, or even Kamala Khan’s Islamic faith, but certainly notable among the X-Men.

Today I’ll Answer:

  • What has Nightcrawler’s religion looked like through comics history?
  • Is there space for Christianity on Krakoa?
  • What does this history tell us about what to expect in 2021’s Way of X and beyond?

The Hickman X-Men (Re)Read: House of X #5, Pt.2 – The Mutant Renaissance

III. Renaissance & Celebration (pgs6-19)

And we’re back—at the start of HOX/POX. With so many mutants having died before the Hickman era and not a few of the same being teased in HOX/POX previews and the mystery of “the pod people” in HOX 1, we knew that mutant resurrection was going to be key to the start of Hickman’s run.

Big Brawls and Brooding Babes in Acts of Vengeance: Spider-Man & The X-Men

May 13, 2021 by Sara Century Leave a Comment

Web of Spider-Man #61, written by Gerry Conway, art by Alex Saviuk, Keith Williams, and Bob Sharen, lettering by Rick Parker

The early ’90s were a wild time for comics, and it’s no exaggeration to say that seismic shake-ups were happening all across the medium. Nowhere was that more true than at Marvel, where creative teams of many years were being ousted in favor of new directions brought in by “fresh new artists” like Rob Liefeld, Jim Lee, Todd MacFarlane, and a handful of others. Stylism over substance took the industry by storm, and the effects of that, both positive and negative, are still felt to this day.

Amid the changing creative teams and the industry-wide trends that would ultimately define the era, there is Marvel’s Acts of Vengeance crossover. A core group of elite supervillains including William Fisk, Magneto, the Red Skull, and the Wizard (among others) recruited dozens of villains to attack different superheroes than they normally would under the premise that fighting slightly changing up the heroes’ rogue galleries would leave them permanently defeated. This… didn’t… work, mostly because there was zero strategy behind it. This razor-thin plot is typical of the time period: highly disjointed, and still completely badass, because it allowed months of page space dedicated to big, pointless brawls that didn’t really have to adhere to any kind of a coherent overarching plot outside of the ongoing stories within each individual book.
