With Moon Knight arriving in Disney+ in a few weeks, another aspect of the Fist of Khonshu is coming with him: Mr. Knight! It’s even a big part of the show’s marketing! This shouldn’t surprise anybody familiar with the character (though I admit I was pleasantly surprised myself): despite it being quite a recent creation, Marc Spector’s “Mr. Knight” guise has become so deeply ingrained in the Moon Knight mythos that it’d be difficult to imagine a Moon Knight story without it anymore. Interestingly enough, those recent runs of Moon Knight comics are the ones we’re dealing with in today’s Omnibussin’ (synergy!), as—despite their definitive reinvention of the character and obvious influence on the adaptation—none of them have been turned into Marvel omnibuses. Omnibussin: Moon Knight, Mapped Right!
Has there ever been a better time to be into Marvel’s own lunar-inclined vigilante? Since mid-2021, Jed MacKay and Alessandro Cappuccio have been dazzling us every month with their superb run, just as the character is getting a Disney+ show this March, starring Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke. And it’s looking promising! It helps that it appears to be partly inspired by my personal favorite run from Jeff Lemire and Greg Smallwood, which examined the complexities of Marc Spector’s dissociative identity disorder and his -let’s say- “argumentative” relationship with the Egyptian God Khonshu, who once saved his life and in whose name Spector became the vigilante Moon Knight. Moon Knight By Brian Michael Bendis & Alex Maleev Review!
Marc Spector is a troubled man. In the opening pages of Moon Knight #1 by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Alex Maleev, we see the origins of these troubles – betrayed and gravely wounded by his partner Bushman, a brown-haired mercenary collapses at the foot of a statue of the Egyptian god Khonshu and apparently dies. However, it turns out that we are not witnessing the 616 origins of Marc Spector, Moon Knight, after all. We are watching the cliffhanger ending of the first episode of “Legend of the Khonshu”, a television show Spector is producing in his new stomping grounds of Hollywood. Here we have an in-story fictionalization of events whose truth has been questioned over decades of publication history – was Marc Spector truly saved from the brink of death by an ancient Egyptian god, or is psychological trauma contributing to a dangerous delusion? Meet Marc Spector in the Moon Knight Omnibus
Moon Knight is one of the stranger superheroes, and his relationship with violence, heroism, and the ghosts of his own misdeeds have combined to create one of Marvel’s most underrated properties. That’s sure to change with the debut of the pending TV series, but it’s easy to forget that this is a character that has been hanging around in the Marvel Universe since all the way back in 1975. Despite a fair number of solo series and guest appearances over decades, Moon Knight (aka Marc Spector) can be a hard nut to crack.
Fortunately, there are now collections that make it easy to read all of Marc Spector’s earliest stories in the same place. Moon Knight Omnibus Vol. 1 collects Moon Knight’s first appearances in Werewolf By Night, a handful of team-up issues, an offbeat collaboration with the Defenders, his short run as a back-up story in Hulk Magazine, and the first twenty issues of his 1980 solo run. Though it introduces Marc Spector as a guest star to other heroes, this trade proves that his early days can be read as a surprisingly linear character arc. The Best Moon Knight Comics Of All Time!
Moon Knight! He’s Batman in a white suit! He’s Daredevil but SUPER CRAZY! He’s Oscar Isaac, in the near future. The Fist of Khonshu isn’t one of Marvel’s most famous characters, nor one that has really ever broke through to the upper echelons of the Marvel Pantheon. He’s been an Avenger and a Hero for Hire, had solo ongoings and minis for decades, and is the proud owner of some of the greatest outfits in comics. But…is he any good?
The answer is: Yeah, kind of! While Moon Knight doesn’t share the same deep well of classic stories as many other Marvel standouts, he has absolutely had several well worth reading. Which is why you’re here, probably, so, without further preamble: Here are the 10 Best Moon Knight Stories! [Read more…] about The Best Moon Knight Comics Of All Time!
